My Daughters home....gone in a fire..

NEWS: Firefighters responded to several fires last night, and a call-in for all available members was performed.

Fire crews were called to an apartment complex at 46 Carswell Rd just after 2:45 a.m. this morning. The fire reached all four floors of the building and residents were evacuated. There is extensive damage to the building, but luckily no one was injured during the fire

My daughter and her boyfriend have lost their home in this apartment fire. They have just been making ends meet on a small government income plan for the mentally disabled. (about 1300.00 monthly, rent takes 900.00 of that) I have been funding their grocery bill quite regularly for some time now... Stupid of me to be worried about food and not even questioning tenant insurance...they are uninsured, wont happen again.

We don't live near them, so my help is remote...friends are sending wal mart gift cards to them and such...we have them safe and warm at a local Holiday Inn...

Friends and relatives are asking about being able to help out thru a "funding site" does anybody have any ideas where to start here?

Just needed to express this.... I hope your days going better than mine! Thanks folks.

Mike

Sorry to hear that.

You could set up a paypal account for them, or people can just email money now with Canadian banks.

Mike you might try contacting the local VFD to see what avenues of help are available.

Also there may be state programs available to help with food, rent, etc.

I'm sorry to hear that. Glad they were not hurt. I don't know how to set up a donation site. If someone does it, I would like to participate.

I have no advice but the situation sounds terrible. Praying things turn around soon.

Is there any chance they can move in with you for a while?

Sorry to hear about your daughter, it sucks.

One of the reasons I won't live in an apartment complex.

Around here it seems one catches fire every other day.

Medicine Hat Family Service » Medicine Hat Family Service

Link for Social Services in the Hat. If she already has a case worker the process will go a lot faster. There is also a bunch of links to other Social Services available.

Thanks Guys!!! Red cross has stepped up for two more nights in a hotel...That takes a little of stress off my pocket book right now!

They are 300 miles away from me....that's what makes it so hard.

I anticipate a couple days off work here soon to run down there and straighten things up.

OH!!!! and the best news is......The kids DID HAVE a small TENANT PACK insurance policy!!! Its a basic thing that will help them refurnish.....but I am having a tough time remotely finding out if it covers interim housing...

My Nephew introduced me to email transfers!!! They work great! Family and friends have already given about a $1500.00 that will also help out a lot!!!

How is the rental vacancy rates in the Hat?
Hope everything will be resolved soon.

One side question. What kind of D-bag rates a thread like this with one star?
Just curious...

Thanks guys....Things are getting better! The Red Cross has stepped up to the plate and helped with clothing and offered a couple nights lodging...I asked if they could give it to someone else affected as I have paid for the hotel so far. Somebody else out there may not have as good a support system as she does. They took advantage of the clothes. Now...the insurance company wants to salvage living room furniture and the bed....but the kids say they really smell of smoke. So we have to see if they can clean it up or if we are going to have to push for replacement. The landlord has worked pretty hard to find new apartments...they get theirs in two more days!!! So they have a place to live but no furniture yet. The kids are rolling with it very well right now! Proud of both of them.....

A few guys have asked to help....to you folks who have offered help and those who expressed sincere concern I thank you!
Take no offence when I say this, but this thread was not placed here as a way to help fund her rebuilding. We appreciate these offers but really family and close social friends have stepped up...these kids will be doing fine!
If this story has made you feel like helping out...remember your own local Red Cross branch, or woman's shelter...soup kitchen, food bank. There are lots of folks living around us who are just one minor emergency away from being totally lost, helpless and even homeless. My daughter is lucky to have loved ones that can step up and help her out.
I think our family has learned a lot and have grown closer thru this event....hold your kids a little bit longer tonight when you send them to bed, or they head off to their own homes...let them know they are loved, and safe in your presence.
Thanks again guys!!!
