Single best car/racing/driving book you have ever read.

I was reading reviews of this book.
http://www.amazon.com/Go-Like-Hell-Ferrari-Battle/dp/0547336055

This was the line that hooked me:
Quote:
I couldn't put it down when I got off the subway; it's the best book I've read in years. I think it's billed incorrectly as a story about racing. To me it read as a compelling fight between two strong and very different characters (Mr. Ford and Mr. Ferrari). Ford represents the young gun in big business while Ferrari is the elder artisan. The two men could have been toothpick saleseman for all I cared.

You get to name one book.
It can be a Bentley manual.
It can be a track driving book.
It can be a biography or history book.
It can be a car maintenance zen philosophy book.

What is the single best car book you have ever read ?

Bought my first copy at 16 when I bought my first car, 63 Bug.

Bought another copy a few years ago when I started racing Vintage Formula Vee

I guess if I had to pick, it would be this one, but then I haven't read that many car related books.

I also like his book Sports Car and Competion Driving.

The best car book I've read recently is called "Beast"; it's the story of how Roger Penske and Ilmor designed and built a pushrod engine for the Indy 500 in almost complete secrecy, won the race and promptly had the engine banned by Tony George....

Right now I'm reading "Plays With Cars"; a lot of funny anecdotes about different cars from an enthusiasts point of view...

#2 would be the Art of Racing in the Rain. If I can include Motorcycles and you have a history of riding Hwy 1 north of SF:

#1: Tales from Over the Edge - by BT Bullet

Tales from Over the Edge - Kindle edition by B.T. Bullet. Professional & Technical Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

Sugar - Thanks for the tip, always looking for a good book. I was able to download onto my tablet today from my local library. It's next up after I finish the book I'm on now......

A good one for sure!

I always liked Michael Fuller's IMSA GTP book as well. Probably my favorite era of racing.

Inside IMSA's Legendary GTP Race Cars: The Prototype Experience: J. A. Martin, Michael J. Fuller, David Hobbs: 9780760330692: Amazon.com: Books

If you are interested in sports/prototypes his website has incredible analyses.

"Best Damn Garage in Town"-Smokey Yunick. Great read, and worth it just for the stories about his adventures during the war flying around in "borrowed" airplanes.

Sunday Driver - Brock Yates

It must have been good because I read it 35 years ago and I still remember that I liked it.

Street Rod - Henry Gregor Felsen

One of the first car books that I ever read. I must have been 8-9 years old and it helped make me a car guy.

Is "Street Rod" the one where the kid builds up a trick deuce, paints it pink and gets killed on the last page?
