SC Targa or RS Z28

And that's my dilemma. Have a pristine 81 SC Targa, and a (almost) fully restored1973 RS Z28. I don't need both cars and don't drive either near enuff. It's a lot easier for me to work on the Camaro because I understand it better. I do some stuff to the SC, but for a lot I have to take it in. And the SC still needs smog checks. Thank you California!!!

Wife actually likes the SC more. I'm gettin' old folks, and working on cars is not high on my list of fun things to do. I have a UTV and it takes plenty of my time with a wrench!! So I sat in the barn today looking at them both. I've decided one has to go, and I'm leaning toward the Camaro.

Yeah yeah, I know this is a Porsche forum, but it's also a collection of folks that appreciate classic cars. So if you were an old fart like me, what would be your preference?

When you enter the barn to drive a car which one do you choose first?

Didn't you mean which one do I work on first?????????????

Kind of an unfair question, 'cause the P-Car has sat for a long time. It has warmup issues which I'm currently trying to figure out and fix. The Camaro has AC, so in the summer it would get more use. But if I sell the Camaro, then I could easily pop 2k into the SC and put a nice Pro Cooler system in it. AND, factory AC in 1973 wasn't all that great. From a vanity standpoint, both cars get the wow look, just depends on the crowd. I know whatever decision I make I will regret, but that's life. Always talking about the one we 'Gave away'!

I'm going to say sell the SC.

As you posted, the Z is easier to work on and less likely to have to taken in for repair.

Both are very desirable and you are fortunate to have to make the decision.

Or I could really upset the SC folks,,,sell them both and buy a newer Carrera that has a better motor, tranny, A/C, and isn't as dirty by California standards. Hmmmmm....hadn't thought about that.

I meant drive. All things being equal - both cars running well with period AC - which would you rather drive?

Personally I'm not much of a cruiser. My 87' has lots of suspension mods and loves to canyon carve. It only has +-200HP which isn't going to win any drag races but when I put a series of corners together on my favourite roads it never fails to put a big grin on my face.

Your two cars provide two pretty different experiences so maybe you need to figure out which experience you'd rather have.

I could be wrong here, but the Camaro seems more like a car show/cars and coffee rig that gets parked and polished as opposed to being driven. For me, the Camaro would be about the destination and the SC would be about the journey.

Or buy a 996. Faster, working AC, won't break, and pocket one hell of a nice vacation fund.

You have poetic rationale. I think you just gave me the answer I, deep down, should have known all along!

Sell both and buy a 993. I sold my 71 corvette roadster and 81 SC coupe and bought my 993. No regrets! Working a/c and beat the SC track times on street tires ...

Stock motor (rebuilt) is on a dolly. I kept all the stock stuff, but put a punched out 350 with aluminum heads, roller everything, and all tricked out motor in it. I wouldn't bastardize the car, so I just did a swap. Should have kept my money and not built that motor, but the past is behind me!

Take money and value out of the equation. Which car do you and your wife enjoy more? You said she prefers the SC. Which do you prefer? Do you like to drive both equally? Is one more fun to putter around in? Make your choice on which car you want to keep. Hagerty value indicator seems to think they are both worth around the same price range (1973 Z28 is worth a few thousand more...)

I have sold a lot of cars over the years. I enjoyed them while I had them and have fond memories of the time they were mine. There is always some reason that I chose to sell them though. When I think about getting another one, I always remember whey I sold the one I had in the first place.

The Porsche is more fun to drive, that's a no brainer. The Camaro is more comfortable on the back. I've been talking with my wife about this matter. Currently having a CIS issue with the Porsche, so I have to get that fixed first. I might just sell tem both and get a 993 or even a 996.

Based on current 996 prices you can get a soft and hardtop. I'd get the 993.
