Must-do American Road Trips- what's on your list?
Read an article on the top 5 US road trips, and that got me thinking about what my favorite roads are.
The article (https://www.yahoo.com/travel/5-must-do-american-road-trips-116263536772.html) lists the following roads: 1. Colorado’s Scenic and Historic Byways 2. South Carolina’s BBQ Trail 3. Alaska’s Seward Highway 4. New York’s Finger Lakes Region 5. Wyoming’s Wild West Here's my list: 9. Rocky Mountain National Park - Trail Ridge Road - Colorado 8. Mt. Rainier - the Road to Paradise station - Washington 7. Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel 6. Everglades Rt. 75 (Alligator Alley) - Florida 5. PCH - Pacific Coast Highway - California 4. Sedona SR-179 (Red Rock Scenic Road) - Arizona 3. Deal's Gap - Tail of the Dragon - North Carolina 2. Road to Hana - Maui - Hawaii 1. Seward Highway & Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel to Whittier- Alaska I have driven all of these, except for #3: Deal's Gap. But that road is on my bucket list for certain! So what's on your list?

I've always wanted to drive my 993 cross country; NC to CA and back. Take my time and explore some of the states on my way.

Unfortunately IIRC the speed limit on the parkway is 45?

45 mph speed limit is what makes it bitter.
Is this roads I have done, or want to do? I like the road up the Columbia River Gorge, the road that runs up and down the West Coast is pretty outstanding in a number of areas. In and around Glacier Park is nice. I have always wanted to drive out to Key West.

Also on my bucket list is to attend every IMSA/Tudor United SportsCar Championship race in a season. Perhaps I can start by attending all of the East Coast/Midwest races and working my West. I need more PTO!

Some people see that speed limit as a "suggestion'.
Depending on when you drive it, the speed limit and traffic are non-issues. I did it once in the spring, start to finish. Set the cruise at 50 something and had the road to myself for the majority of the drive. Was able to enjoy the drive as well as the scenery.

Really? I've done that one many times and it's 45 minutes of straight line and boredom, punctuated occasionally by butt clenching when you realize you're low on gas and the only gas station is on the micosukee (I could remember wrong) tribe ground and you might not make it that far ;-)
Or the rare time an alligator will try to cross the road (happened to me once at night) That would not make the top 1000 on my list, even in a 356A at top speed, which I did once. Except maybe the day cops are on strike as a top speed test in something newer. |

I have driven around this country a number of times and have driven all the routes mentioned except the Alaska roads, much to my disappointment. Soon, I hope..
If you like the high desert, sweeping vistas, etc. it is hard to beat Route 50 out of Reno across Nevada into Utah. Often called the "loneliest road in Amaerica" I find the trip simply stunning. If you go during the right time of year - early fall - you any not see another car for a half hour. The mountain passes are amazing, the straights between the mountains a great opportunity to blow out some carbon😀 The great thing is that Route 50 feeds into some other extraordinary drives in Utah.

I have to add the Beartooth Highway to the list. If you do the road at 5 AM in the summer, you'll have it to yourself for all 70 miles. You are literally at the top of the world. Its amazing.

Gotta add RT66. Some serious '50s Americana on that trip. People come from all over the world to make the journey from LA to Chicago....

Ca Highway 49 through goldrush country is nice. Starts around Sonora and ends near Tahoe. Lots of great fishing along the way.

-Blue Ridge Parkway on non-season is an amazing drive. It's been way too long since I've done this.
-Alligator alley was neat to see the absolute desolateness of the area, and how vulnerable you would be in a Hurricane situation. Half way across AA is a native settlement that has a neat alligator show, and air boat rides. -I would like to take my kids up Pike's Peak in Colorado, and tour Yellowstone again. -I really enjoyed camping all the way around the perimeter of Michigan and checking out lighthouses, and the 1000' frieghters. -I want to run the tail of the dragon in my Porsche, not by accident while pulling a camper trying to get to Cherokee. Never been to California, and would love to check out Monterey speed week, visit my wife's cool Uncle, and take a spirted car up the PCH. -I want to take my time touring the Florida Keys, and check out all the mansions on "millionaires row" in Miami. -I want to take at least a month to tour Alaska. -Some of those legendary backroad Vermont roads. |
