I want to drive your number 4, Alaska's Seward Highway. I have driven to Canada but not in it, I have driven most of Baja, both coasts, both coasts of Mexico, the west coast to Guadalajara and another time the east coast to Veracruz then across through Chiapas to the Pacific coast into Guatemala, down through El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and all over Costa Rica, into Panama. I have worked in Alaska but never driven a car there. I bought a VW once with plans to use it for the trip but it never happened. Now I would like to take my wifes new Golf Diesel to Alaska but not with her. So nooo chance of it happening. I could take my Cherokee without her but the gas would kill me.

I was asked why Mt. St. Helens was so memorable. I stopped there on my annual trip through Oregon and Washington. I finished up business in Wa more efficiently than I thought I would, so there was a day to spare on the return trip back to Calif.

The drive through the 15-20 mile blast zone was literally like driving through a cemetery of the Earth's biomass and related mineral mass. It's almost beyond description, the scale of destruction is so hard to comprehend. And to think it happened in mere minutes is just unbelievable. To top it off, the loss of life and the re-making of life is part of a CYCLE that happens apparently with regularity there over centuries, and that it will happen again centuries hence. Really pictures do not do it justice. Seeing a top half of a mountain ripped off just says bad joo joo like nothing else. That tiny spec is a helicopter.

^^^^This! 95 out of Blanding to 24 to 12. Hop a little north on 89 to 143 and run that over the pass and through Brianhead. Drop down 15 and stay in Cedar City at the recently redone Best Western. Kind of a fresh mid century modern vibe to it iirc. And reasonable. BYOB. I have done this both ways start or finish in Telluride for a good full day.

Follow that with a million dollar highway run up and back through Ouray. Or head out to Gateway via 145. All three are great drives and you can base out of a spectacular spot.
