Old stuff
Yesterday, I saw the oldest piece of art in the world, in the Israel Museum. A female figurine, created almost a quarter of a million years ago. OK, I gotta admit, that's old.
Other stuff dating to Christ's time, doesn't really impress me. Hell, I'm over a half century old. I have stuff in boxes over a century old. I have motorcycles nearly a half century old. If it just sits there in my garage, I don't see why it can't last a couple thousand years. I also saw the dead sea scrolls. Call me jaded, but I don't really see the big deal. Now, when something is a quarter million years old... that gets my attention. Its amazing that there is so little stuff on earth that has survived a lousy couple thousand years. Everything destroyed in the name of religion. Don't wanna PARF this up, but really makes you think about things... |
I think that I just read a loose comparison between motorcycles and the dead sea scrolls. Cool.

Old stuff is interesting......on the news last night there was a short piece about excavating ancient ruins and it was a "red light" area they figured. Well what did they find.....a "martial aid" as we call them now. Leather wrapped with bristles on one end! My wife said hey look just like today's!

Some guy bought the scrolls in the '50s for $94. Motorbikes cost a lot more than that. Just saying'.

Also don't want to PARF this up... but don't understand why folks around here post a religious/political opinion here and then want a pass by saying "don't want to parf this up" Like if I posted "don't want to PARF this up but a certain political party are a bunch of morons." Carry on... |
Are you sure about the quarter of a million years? I thought the female figuring you might be referring to was more like 25K years old.

Indirectly they were - a lot of Japanese imperialism stemmed from the fanatical belief that the emperor (revered as a god) had to be honored by conquest. The war wasn't the direct result of religion but it certainly helped to ensure the fanatical loyalty of the Imperial army / navy. Religion has always been a great tool for despots seeking to control the masses - particularly weak-minded masses. |
I think it's cool that you are out there experiencing so much of the early history of western civilization. How does it feel to be in the presence of antiquity? So cool. Green with envy here...

I love old stuff too. You should go to Turkey, Search: Göbekli Tepe. It's on my radar.
