John, We need more of that spirit on this board, sometimes from me! :D

Cornpanzer 11-05-2002 07:58 PM

Ive been reading this and chuckling because this is a consistant scenario in every community that I have ever been involved in. Someone forms a club that is popular with many people. Someone else is critical of the club because they dont fit the criteria. C'mon guys....this isnt a political office we are talking about. Some say the RGruppe is hypocritical......so what? Its thier club, let them do as they please. If I form a club for blue Yugo's and decide to let a red one in because I like the guy.....well, guess what, its my club! As the old saying goes, "its good to be king" or even better "if you dont like it, start your own club" :) Others say that some of the members are arrogant....big deal......your not in the club with them so why does it matter to you? Once again, this isnt public office so they can be as rude or arrogant as they want. Does your happiness really hinge on what the RGruppe does? ITS JUST A LITTLE INFORMAL CLUB. If you lay awake at night worrying about the consistancy of the rules in some guys Porsche club then maybe you need to look into additional hobbys to occupy your mind.....or at the very least some good beer. I hope no-one takes this personally, but I cant belive that this is so big of a deal to some peeps that they run up 5 pages of text..........oh no, Im part of the problem!!!;)

All 911's are equal.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads/000Beauty.jpg

It's just that some 911's are more equal than others. ;)

speeder 11-05-2002 11:55 PM

What's that old saying, Jack? Was it Abe Lincoln or Ted Turner who said: "All men are created equal; that doesn't mean you have to stay that way." ;) Could apply to 911s, as well.

DonDavis 11-06-2002 12:12 AM

Just when I think Cornpanser is gonna try and be a wet blanket...he realized the "application" of the "ointment" was not required....I mean....the correction of th....no wait

oh Hell, all I know is I am going to try my best to be at the next RGruppe gathering.

I have the car I want and the vision to make it into something that can piss off my neighbor's barking dog!!:D

Also, hey Corn, I saw your pics of the Gatlinburg trip. Nice car!!

thrown_hammer 11-06-2002 04:20 AM

I don't know anyone in the "RGRUPPE" so I will refrain from any comments. But I did go to their website and read the "Words of hotrodding advice". I feel much better now, particularly with #28 and #38. Everyone have a pleasant day.;)

You don't "think" you can, but you are forming an opinion on assumption and theory. My '74 S was just as "tossable" as my 69.

It isn't that you guys have preferences for the earlier 911s (I love them, too). It's the reasoning you use to put everything else down AND some of the reasoning you use to put your favorites on pedestals. By the time you put wide fenders and tires, 3.2 liter engines, bigger wings, etc on your car it won't be any more "tossable" than my '74 non-sunroof coupe with light seats and narrow tires, even if it's a hundred lbs lighter (a difference that is often made up for in driver and passenger weights when driven by real people...)

The aesthetic reasoning of using the earlier car is unimpeacheable. Even if I liked my '74 better than a stock '73, or if I liked teh Euro bumper/S spoiler look of the '69 better than the '74, that's a purely subjective difference that cannot be questioned. But claims like the early 911 is a pure expression of Porsche's original intent is just wishful thinking, and saying you don't "think" anything newer than '73 will be as "tossable" just shows arrogant posturing to justify the fact that you like the looks of the earlier car's bumpers better, so that after you're done putting mile wide rear wheels and RSR flares you can still feel dynamically superior to the car that just kicked your butt on the track.

I love the RGruppe concept, and was going that way with my black '66 912 (the plan was to use a nearly 3 liter Type 4 engine and 15/8s under pulled out stock appearing fenders, ducktail and S front spoiler). But I wouldn't want the fact that I liked the look of the early non-flared cars better blind my to the dynamic truths of the later cars.

I Wanna Throw Up

U know for once I agree wt Randy Wells statement about a mile back.......about liking the early 911S's better. But other than that Blah Blah Blah oh how nice it is. Who cares...... the R Gruppe guys are a bunch of pretentious Cultist's.... Out to spread the gospel according to the R Gruppe Meister. Other than that they are a bunch of nice guys who like their Porsches Bastardized.

You won't catch a set of RS or SC flares on my 69 911S I likem as GOD and DR. Porsche intended them.... as it came from the factory. An don't try an pull my pants down with the revelation that the kid next door VW can go faster. I am simply driving a moment in time when that was the best that Porsche could do, and I enjoy that fact for what it is.

See How Touchy They Get

I thought about using the word OWN as in "own a moment in time", but decided against it.

Furthermore now the TRUE colors of the R Gruppe come out now don't they Curtis.......

J P Stein 11-06-2002 11:14 AM

Humm.....tough crowd......

Dr. Machiavelli.....er... Island has succeeded in reaching *A* conclusion......or at least a good place for Wayne to shut this thread down. A gruppe hug seems to be out of the question.

thrown_hammer 11-06-2002 12:17 PM

Just goes to show... High school is never truly over.;)

CamB 11-06-2002 12:32 PM

See, now here is the inherent problem between trying to mix food an RGruppe cars:

"Marinate lamb for at least 3 hours, put on skewers and Grill over hot fire until down using remaining marinated to baste."

Stay with me on this. What we see here is a 930 recipe. That big-ass intercooler is perfect for grilling (fan-grill anyone?).

A non-turbo can really only accomplish the bake function. Maybe a little foil wrapped salmon stashed against the valve covers.

But grilling is so not RGruppe.

Actually that reminds me of a half-arsed plan I had once to build a 3.0RS replica from a 930. Strip her down and boost her up. I ran into two problems:

- I bet an intercooler doesn't fit under an IROC tail (and no offence to tea tray owners, but they don't do it for me)

- it would cost $40k, which is about $40k too much right now

Thank you! Actually, Obin Robinson posted a link to tabs52's other "enthusiast" thread, where that pretentious little twit was blathering on. SInce I've had many Porsche's, restored and raced many more, and will probably have more in the future, I figured I'd register here. :)

And tabs52, there is no such thing as "bastardization" of a car that the good Dr. meant to be customized and modified for more performance. You just mouth an arbitrary line not to cross. As arbitrary as the original purists who saw the 356 as the last "true Porsche" and the air cooled guys who saw the waterpumpers as "blashemy" and the sports car crowd who moved that line to the Cayenne. It's all arbitrary and misses teh point of Porsche, both the company AND the man, entirely. Yet that line-making presumes to know completely what's best in the religious cult of the "True Porsche" without really acknowledging anything that IS true about Porsche.

It's a wonderful series of cars, and an impressive car company. But it's not a religion.

CamB 11-06-2002 01:14 PM

Just think, the Cayenne will be perfect for towing that trailer to meetings ;)

Matt Smith 11-06-2002 02:15 PM

:) Nice, Sam.

Soterik 11-06-2002 02:40 PM

Well, there's not going to be a final word in this topic that's for sure....

But here's a link to some pics from the last Cambria meet.....make your own judgements on the cars...rather than what you "think" they are because of someone's posting....

http://www.pelicanparts.com/swapmeet_pics/R_Gruppe_02/Page1.htm

As you will see many cars are narrow body, non flair, no tail cars..and many more that didn't make the pics aren't either....perhaps too boring for the picture taker??

My RGruppe car isn't flaired....no tail, but I like it, and it weighs 2270 lbs like it's supposed to....the engine case is a 66 aluminum case.....and I stand by my previous posts....been there done that.....
