what's up with the pop ups when clicking on threads?

It started later this evening. When I go and click on a thread, blank screen comes on and then Crackle, some movie type page pops up. The most PITA of them all is the video that plays in the lower right corner. It freezes up everything until it stops playing. I am using a Mac if that makes any difference?

This happens when you are signed in? What browser are you using? I'm on a mac too, using Firefox browser, and it's not happening to me.

Looks like you have caught an add-on or two for FF. Check the add-ons.

Yeah sounds like a browser hijack.

Sorry, you have to be signed in to post, so of course you were signed in.
I'm thinking there is a glitch in the NSA software. They are supposed to invisibly flag threatening/dangerous/suspicious words, not underline them. I'll take care of it.

You got a browser add on object of some kind.

I'd start here: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/disable-or-remove-add-ons

Update Firefox.
Install NoScript as an addon.
Disable all other addons for now.

Then enable them all slowly, one for each restart, until the problem comes back.
Boom. There is the suspect addon!!! Remove it permanently.
The situation should be obvious if the contamination is only in the browser.

You may need to uninstall the whole browser with CCleaner (which also has a registry cleanup) and then re-install a fresh version direct from the Mozilla website.

On a deeper O.S. level:
Run Malwarebytes and/or MSSE (Microsoft security essentials).

It's worth double-checking the processes running within the Operating System. (CNTRL+ALT+DEL).
Do an internet search for "process library". Most sites for this are ambiguous and difficult to understand, but it's worth getting to know the usual happenings.

(edit) oops. I didn't read this is a mac machine. YMMV.

Most likely the exploit changed only the default page that loads when launching a new browser window.

Start by going into browser prefs under "General" and resetting your start page to blank.

Then under the "Search" tab delete any unknown search engines.

Keep the obvious like google, Bing, Yahoo, duckduckgo.

If it's redirecting to Crackle on startup then it's fairly benign.

Crackle.com is a legitimate site.

The *******s that wrote the redirect are likely a part of an affiliate program where they get paid for clicks to Crackle.

Oh, I get it now. My kids were watching something right before I got on. That might have done it.
