dealer ettiquette question
I phone an old established P car dealer about 120 mi away about interest in my 993. The sales mgr asked me to bring it in and I said that was impossible ,he asked me to take it to our recently opened Pcar dealer in my own city instead. He disclosed during the call ,the older dealer was a partner in the newer dealership.
I took the car to the local dealer. They looked it over and said they weren,t interested in it because of it,s age(1995). A week later I received a call from the used car mgr at the older distant dealer .Who offered me $xx,xxx . No other conditions expressed or implied. I thought about it 2 days ,called back asked if offer still open and accepted it. Again no conditions. Then went shopping for replacement car. I called to ask for instructions about the trade in ,should the new dealer call him or would he call them. During that call ,he throws out the new condition ,that he now needs to see the car. I never tried to work up the original offer and he had 2 calls to require the final viewing requirement and didn,t do so. IS THIS NORMAL WAY OF DOING BUSINESS ? Idon,t think so. Should I complain to the dealer principal or just figure out how to drive 250 mi round trip and expect a new lowball price when I get there? Or walk?

Why even sell to a dealer? Every air cooled 911 is now desirable and the 993 is right up there at the top. I'd take a few pics and post it here on the 911 classifieds. You will get more money and probably less hassle.

Not sure .Pound sand is pretty universal. Here we often say "Pound Salt" but the meaning is universal.
I would expect such treatment from many used car salesmen BUT Porsche dealerships like to see themselves in a "snottier light". You know, the talking about our "clients" instead of customers kind of thing. I have it posted here and have had a number of calls and offers which don,t materialize , I,m getting tired of the hassle ,having just had a massive heart attack 3 weeks ago,my heart isn,t in it any longer. Selling to a dealer allows me to avoid the 13% sales tax here on a new car. . If this deal doesn,t go through I am open to lowering the price and just getting rid of it. Let the PMs begin again

I agree with Kurt. Advertise extensively on the private market and sell at your price to who you want. Used car sales people are used car sales people no matter what mark they deal in. Even though you think you are considered a "client", you're still just a "customer."

It may be worth the time, effort, and money to hire someone to take professional pics of your car and do a highly detailed ebay write up. I did this myself for my Dad's 25' Airstream trailer a few years back and ended up getting $6000 more than the book value because of the many, many pictures and I detailed the stats and specs on every system in the trailer. I had closeups of the writing on the tires, the capacities emblems and plates, and even the imperfections like dents, or scratches.
A dealer is always going to offer you at least 25% less than retail for your trade. You could hire someone (if you aren't able) to place that ebay add to potentially get 25% MORE than retail on your car. Last edited by ckelly78z; 05-05-2015 at 09:54 AM.. |

I think most Porsche dealers probably look at a 1995 model as just another used car. In this case they clearly don't have their act together and to make you drive 250 miles is absurd without knowing what to expect when you get there. Clearly they aren't willing to invest the time, but expect you too. My guess is if you listed the car here and on a few other select 'Porsche' enthusiast sites (not CL) you'll have it sold within a couple weeks and at a fair price.
It shouldn't be to hard to sell a 95 911 in the Spring market. Try it, what do you have to lose? If not interested in doing it yourself, find a consigner? Good luck!

Are you sure your ad is incorrect? There is no sales tax to pay (therefore no refund) until the car is registered in Canada.
I think the car can be exported without paying any tax. There may be a tax on export at the border, as when you import a car you only pay Canadian customs....

A US buyer pays no import duty because the car originated in the US.

36K is about what your car was worth 5 years ago. Why do people keep saying 993 values are going up? Unless its a TT or an S, I am not seeing it.

A Canadian purchaser pays the provincial sales tax when they register the vehicle.
If the car goes to the US likely at US customs or state tax when it's registered in their state |

Now in 993 land ...

I can't help but think the car doesn't have the same market as if it was US based, specifically a sunshine state.
I would never sell to a dealer. I can do the same thing they do. I value my time, but if I outsource the detailing, I make $100 or more an hour by selling / marketing myself. I also have a wife that can help. She cuts through the BS pretty quick with time wasters. G |

If you ever worked in sales at a new car dealership, you would never return to that snake pit again.

I complained to the dealer principal. Amazing. Now They want me to bring the car back to the local dealer and the sales mgr will drive down here to look at it.

Sounds like you are trying to sell the car to the dealer. Now it sounds like you are wanting to trade it in It was to be traded in at a yet to be determined dealer for a BMW or a MB to save me the 13% sales tax we pay on a new vehicle. I did the legwork to find a buyer . The reason I,m annoyed is the Toronto pcar dealer misled me into accepting an unconditional offer THEN added the requirement to see it again after the deal was verbally accepted by me. Kind of like selling a house at a reduced price because the buyer doesn,t want a home inspection then demanding an inspection anyway. After complaining to the Toronto dealer principal Now the mgr is coming here to look at the car since he wants a look. I,ll see what this compromise does
