Why do I keep reading Sports car Market ?
Seriously I'm going to pull a neck muscle from all the head shaking - there isn't gonna be any "new" info here - but I was browsing the last 2 issues of SCM on my iPad and my hobby has become pure masochism.... I don't know if I should bother renewing, it's painful...
Some of my favorite cars: 230SL pagoda: $140K, a 280: $220K, a little earlier, 190SL: $247K (passed on average ones - 190-230-250- for $25K 4-5y ago?) Alpine A110: $140K (passed on a decent one for $30K years ago due to import issues) Dino: $369K Etype: $220K Tired 356 A coupe: $140K - this one hurts the most as I sold mine for $25K less than 10y ago ;-) If you are a classic car guy, not a millionaire collector or classic car dealer, ouch.... I'm coming to the conclusion that I need a new hobby ;-( "Reading" about those cars doesn't do it for me, I like to own/drive them. Game over... At these prices, if I had that kind of cash in my pocket, even a car nut like me would invest in houses for rent instead... At least I kept an early 911 throughout... PS: I know you know, nothing new, but the rumored bubble ain't bursting so far... And if you buy now and it does, ouch.... PPS: It's still a great magazine, but.... Yeah - I dropped my subscription to SCM a few years ago for many of the same reasons. I noticed that a hobby magazine had turned into the Robb Report.
I do enjoy Hemmings Sports & Exotic, though.

You missed the boat on those. Time to grab an SC, Carrera, 5.0 Mustang, NSX, or another iconic '80s/'90s car now before they skyrocket.

You think? ;-) Not only missed the boat but that boat was upgraded 2 or 3 times since ;-)
Yeah, I know the 80s-90s are next but they don't it for me the same way. Those cars are partial electronics, just modern enough to be hard to fix and troublesome when it come to finding parts (SC is OK but I've owned one for 15y, I was OK letting it go). Although I woulnd't kick a late model Lancia Delta 16V out of my garage when it hits the 25y, mostly I've lived & driven through that era so I'm OK... It's the 50s-60s-early70s that float my boat as collectors/week end drivers/wrenching hobby, and as far as I can tell, it's "game over" for the normal guys when it comes to most of the cool cars of that era now. I might try and grab an Alfa while there's time.... I mean 100K for a 230SL, please!!!! It's not just the price, which is eye watering now, it's the price vs. fun ratio... Someone that pays current market $100K+ for a 75hp 356C makes me scratch my head a little... In that sense yeah, 90s make more sense, and so do modern Porsches. It's just weird to get priced out of your hobby, is all ;-) Last edited by Deschodt; 05-14-2015 at 06:20 AM.. |

Such is the never-ending march of the mid-life crisis. No generation is safe, and mine is next.

Hemmings, I struggle to enjoy. I've sub'd since #1 and I left it behind when I moved last year... I recently resub'd because it was like $10 a year - but it's the same as before. It seems very "lightweight" and british car centric to me, I get more content from the british classic car mags these days, but they cost more $ too (tankfully not on the Ipad).... But yeah, I think I'm done with SCM, it generates more frustration than wonderment at this point... (and I shouldn't even complain as I did manage to grab a long hood 911, 912 and a 2002 at least). Can't resist posting this, it will rejoin me soon now !! Fresh paint ! no more rust !

Very frustrating indeed. Once the rich speculators figured out cars were an investment guys like me can't afford another project that I can comfortably afford. But I'll keep looking.

In my opinion, there are 2 cars my son will ask me "You had a ____ and you didn't keep it?!?!?" because they will be a fortune in years to come.
Porsche 914 and Acura NSX

You could switch to vintage motorcycles. Some rare beautiful machines go for a ong, compared to similar vintages for cars.
