Love me some Indian food but it gives me major heartburn!
I even asked for mild heat! Going to need reflux meds tonight for sure. The grub was tasty though.
Anyone else sacrifice comfort for some great Indian food? |

When on the road I eat it always. I pack some baking soda and dissolve a teaspoon in a glass of water before bed. Cures heartburn. Get a few great burps out as well. More effective then Rolaids or Tums and if it's not chronic you may not need the Prilosec

I love Indian food... especially a good lunch buffet where I can try many different dishes. Thankfully, I don't have any digestive issues with it.

My girlfriend just took me to lunch at an Indian buffet for my first try at Indian food and the hostess told us that they barely spice the buffet, so I had no flare ups.

Try drinking milk after a mouthful of Indian food. It puts the fire out better than water.

If the food is done right it should scorch you pallet but will give a wonderful warming sensation. Just like good TexMex or Asian food. You know its great if the flavor is savory and the heat will make you sweat but you find yourself not being able to stop eating it. Spicing to heat is not easy when done right. Anyone can stoke up the plate with a ghost pepper but it doesn't make it good.
As for the baking soda trick, its not the most pleasant to drink down but it works great! It also does a great good at taken away the gullet breath brought about from the food as well.

Works best if 2% or whole milk. Not enough fat in skim to do much good. Either way, some kheer is a great way to finish an Indian meal!!

I eat Indian as often as possible. The place that I go to for a buffet, uses light spice on the buffet. It's a family owned/run place and they told us that they did that when their kids were young and then when they tried to ramp up as the kids got older, everyone complained. Occassionally the buffet is a little spicy, and more often the same dishes ordered for dinner are more spicey. Neither way gives me heartburn. I find that something with bubbles in it helps with spicy food, whether that is beer, soda (stopped drinking soft drinks many years ago) or these days often club soda. Club soda (or the version you get out of a soda machine which actually has no "soda" but is just carbonated water) really cuts the heat where plain water doesn't.

Only thing that seems to give me heartburn is apple juice. It isn't the spice for me. I can opt for the nuclear option on most ethnic dishes.

Try ordering one of the Indian yogurt based drinks, Lasse?(not sure of the spelling). I always get the mango lasse.
