You Think Porsches are Pricey?

This ad was in my magazine (Flour City is a brand of tractor built between 1900 and 1929):

Here is the 3/4 million dollar tractor.

The seller didn't know what he had. It is a 12 hp built in 1900. The oldest farm tractor known. It even predates the term "tractor." They were called a "traction engine" in those days.

Now that goes back to that bad karma thread about buying something for a steal because the seller didn't know what they had. I hope whoever bought it, shared some of the proceeds. It's not like the value of tractor like that is easy to determine.

Umm, people pay 3/4 million for a TRACTOR? Suddenly those collector cars look halfway reasonable.

You can ask what you want, it's what it sells for that is significant.

This is a case where the seller didn't know what he had but priced it outrageously anyway. The seller's family owned it for 60 years and never knew what model it was. I thought it was crazy to have something that valuable and not bother to do any research on what it is.

The guy who bought it isn't volunteering what he paid, but he did say it wasn't the asking price. I'm guessing it would have sold for something north of $600,000 at auction.

It should be in a museum then?

First Fordson Tractor

This is production model No. 1 of the Fordson tractor. Introduced in 1917, it was the first mass-produced and lightweight tractor made. Henry Ford had long been interesed in developing a tractor to meet the needs of the small farmer. Heralded as the "Model T of farm power," the first Fordsons were shipped to Great Britain to assist in that country's war effort. Following World War I, the Fordson rapidly became the most popular tractor in America. Nearly 750,000 had been produced - more than half of all tractors in the United States. Beginning in 1920, the Census Bureau began recording the enormous declines in the population of farm horses.
