23andMe results

Finally got some results back, only 2.3% Neanderthal. HAH!
Only .2% Native American. So much for my mom telling us we had Indian Blood.
60.4 % British/Irish with a total of 99.7% north European. .1% east Asian.
Not a lot of mix. No wonder I spend so much time at the dermatologist getting stuff frozen off.

Ancestry Composition tells you what percent of your DNA comes from each of 31 populations worldwide. This analysis includes DNA you received from all of your recent ancestors, on both sides of your family. The results reflect where your ancestors lived before the widespread migrations of the past few hundred years.

A history of sorts is good to know.
I think the most interesting thing to be studied is the RH pos, and the RH neg.

Virtually everyone of European lineage has 1-3% Neanderthal; Asians don't.

Genetic Evidence for Neanderthals

From bones like these three (Vi33.16, Vi33.25, Vi33.26) found in the Vindija cave in Croatia, scientists extracted Neanderthal DNA. Using these samples they painstakingly assembled the Neanderthal genome sequence.

More about Neanderthals

Neanderthals were a group of humans who lived in Europe and Western Asia. They are the closest evolutionary relatives of modern humans, but they went extinct about 40,000 years ago. The first Neanderthals arrived in Europe about 200,000 years ago. Neanderthals — Homo neanderthalensis — and modern humans — Homo sapiens — lived along side each other for thousands of years. Genetic evidence suggest that they interbred and although Neanderthals disappeared about 40,000 years ago, traces of their DNA — between 1 percent and 4 percent — are found in all modern humans outside of Africa. Apart from the curiosity of finding what percentage of a modern human's genome is Neanderthal, the information has great value for science. By comparing our DNA with Neanderthal DNA, scientists can detect the most recent evolutionary changes as we developed into fully modern humans. Read more about the science behind this tool.

Interesting. I posted this thread a while back on the subject. Correction, Asians have little or no European ancestry.

Turns out I'm 1.2% Neanderthal!

I was thinking about having my siblings and Father do a genetic test for heritage. What would be the best kit?

Just go to 23andMe.com, if your dad does it he gets both paternal and maternal results, I think it's about $90.00. If a woman does it she only gets her mom's side.
Order on line and they send the kit, pre paid, send it back and w-a-I-t.

I did the whole enchilada for my daughter a few years ago when she was having some health issues. I gave the doctors at Oakland pediatric the pass code so they could see it. They asked for it and said it was helpful. it can tell you what diseases your more likely to get. It also said she was more likely to be a heroine addict. O boy just want you want to here.

Well fok me. I assumed I was a bit Asian with all the crazy food I eat but my mom told me I am Scottish/English and German. The Germans were on my Granny's side who came out here after WW1 to escape the noose. Beautiful family silver and lots of money. The Scottish were poor people. I may get this test done - see if I'm more German or Scottish, or the other way around. When I've had a bit to drink and I yell at people I tend to yell in German if that 's a clue.

FYI

Before you send your $s to 23andMe, just be aware that they are only one provider of DNA testing – and a controversial one at that. They have been in an ongoing battle with the FDA over their health testing.

“23andMe’s main business model, which is to create a massive database of genetic profiles combined with data from thousands of surveys the company conducts with customers to offer pharmaceutical and academic researchers a way to do clinical trials much faster and more cheaply.” Forbes

There are a number of companies offering Y-DNA and MTDNA testing. Do your research. National Geographic is partnered with Family Tree DNA for their sweeping Genographic Project that has been mapping Y-DNA globally. This is the test that both Hugh and I took.

And DNA analysis has been evolving in leaps and bounds every year. My results have been refined and reclassified several times since I took the test 7 years ago.

Thanks Ian, I did a little research last night and it seemed like the tests use a limited Somewhat) data base and only point towards a generality. While I know that the majority of my background is Irish, I do have dark hair and my Dad and older brother have dark complexions (almost like southern Italian) so I was curious is all. Not sure if they could dial it down to being so specific as having different regions.

No, it can't. Ireland - and for that matter much of western Europe - is typically Y Haplogroup R1b. See Eupidea R1b. It can be nailed down further into one of the subclades but all males in your direct family will be the same.

Pretty sure that is straight out of that flick, The Commitments.

Why is it I should care about the percentage of Neanderthal in me again?
