Didn't think I would but I really miss my 911
 

I sold my SC Targa just before last Christmas. I didn't I'd miss it but last week I saw a targa on a joy ride on hwy 1 near Bodega Bay in Northern CA. Since then I've been looking at the classifieds for another targa, 911s and 914s. The only Porsches in my price range now are 944s and beat up 928s. Probably should not have sold my SC. Sellers remorse bites. Think twice before you sell yours.

I have been wondering if i should sell my 911 and buy something more recent. But I just can't get myself to do it. The GF is urging me not to sell it.

What about a 996 or a Boxster?

That's my vote to, Boxster. They are great despite what people think. I 've had 3 944's and two 951's and the Boxster was just brilliant.

Boxsters are killer fun cars, but if you are johnsing for an old 911 the Boxster is not a replacement, trust me

About 8 or 9 years ago I sold my 87 Marine Metallic blue/linen Targa for good money for then. Missed it right away and knew I shouldn't have sold it, but finances dictated it had to go. Damn recession.
Went looking for a sub $10k car as a DD and looked at all sorts of cars and then I came across a 944S2, which frankly was surprised I had never heard of before. Ended up owning an all white one for 7 years and was probably one of the best Porsche cars I ever owned. Fun, practical, all options worked including AC. The roof is an easy in out and extremely SOLID. After 95k miles I sold it to finance my 73.5 renovation. Last night I saw a beautifully well kept 58k mile red S2 at a cruise night and was reminded of why I liked mine so much. Just wowed by the quality build, shape and comfort. Must have talked with the owner for about an hour; discovered we actually had a lot in common; funny how that works.
To me, the new cars are nice, but just don't come close to the materials, the engineering..or soul of the older cars. Boxsters are cool and do handle well, but at the end of the day there are hundreds of thousands of them. Almost any older 911 is unique and by the numbers so are 944S2s. Try to find one and just look it over and then drive it. Make sure if you go that route though, buy a well kept one and not a fixer upper; you'll go broke. Look at some 914s, 968s or 928s? Bet you find one that will put a smile back on your face.

I miss my 86 carrera too. I did not think I would but I do. I sold it to a member here and on rennlist but he stopped posting some time back. I had a carfax that was about to expire last year or so. I ran my old 911 and it came back as failing emissions the year before and no note that it had been registered after. I just hope it is not out there rotting somewhere.

I'll be selling mine and know I'll miss it. I bought it to hot rod and DE. I came to the realization I don't have the funds to use the car in that matter. I've been checking out some Miata's and surprisingly I like them.

One of my reasons for selling the targa is I also have a BMW Z4. It's faster than the SC, handles very well, has all the modern conveniences and is prettier than a Boxster. Today I am doing a tune up on it but working on that car is just not as satisfying as wrenching on an old 911. And frankly, driving the Z4 doesn't make my heart sing like my 911 did. If only my SC had air con and.....

Given your budget I would echo the 996 suggestion.

I agree Miata's are great. The NC has a bit more hp than the NB or NA.

Miata's can be run at a fraction of the cost of a Porsche. However as they say Porsche there is no substitute. The Miata does however provide that small car thrill and blowing up a Miata engine is virtually unheard of. A used NC with power retractable hardtop can be had for one half to 2/3 of the new price.

Advice taken. Every once in a while I get a wandering eye, then I see a thread like this. If only I had $$ (and garage space) for 2.

Funny, I'm not sentimental about cars at all. I always look forward. I've had an SC, a boxster and a 997S. They were all great in their own right, but there is always something else on the horizon. (In my case, my next one will likely be a standard Cayman.)

And btw, I went directly from owning my SC to Boxster (I owned them at the same time for a while). Boxster was the superior car IHMO. Sacrilege, I know.

I'm the same way, I love cars but they are just a means to an end... traded the 944 for a Miata... Miata is WAY less expensive to run but I preferred and miss the 944... Plotting and planning to replace the Miata at this point but have no idea when I will find funds for that move. It's replacement could be anything from a 996 to a Mustang.

RE: Buying a Miata, like just about all cars it is much, much less expensive to buy something that has already been moded/hot roded... upgrades can run from reasonable the insane $$$ and the options are multitude.

Possible the weak point of the Miata (other than it diminutive size) is HP, forced induction is a very popular upgrade (I believe Mazda made a turbo version but for some reason they didn't make a lot of them).
