Didn't think I would but I really miss my 911
I sold my SC Targa just before last Christmas. I didn't I'd miss it but last week I saw a targa on a joy ride on hwy 1 near Bodega Bay in Northern CA. Since then I've been looking at the classifieds for another targa, 911s and 914s. The only Porsches in my price range now are 944s and beat up 928s. Probably should not have sold my SC. Sellers remorse bites. Think twice before you sell yours.
|
That's tough.
I hope you find one within your budget soon. I have been wondering if i should sell my 911 and buy something more recent. But I just can't get myself to do it. The GF is urging me not to sell it. |
What about a 996 or a Boxster?
|
That's my vote to, Boxster. They are great despite what people think. I 've had 3 944's and two 951's and the Boxster was just brilliant.
|
Boxsters are killer fun cars, but if you are johnsing for an old 911 the Boxster is not a replacement, trust me
|
About 8 or 9 years ago I sold my 87 Marine Metallic blue/linen Targa for good money for then. Missed it right away and knew I shouldn't have sold it, but finances dictated it had to go. Damn recession.
Went looking for a sub $10k car as a DD and looked at all sorts of cars and then I came across a 944S2, which frankly was surprised I had never heard of before. Ended up owning an all white one for 7 years and was probably one of the best Porsche cars I ever owned. Fun, practical, all options worked including AC. The roof is an easy in out and extremely SOLID. After 95k miles I sold it to finance my 73.5 renovation. Last night I saw a beautifully well kept 58k mile red S2 at a cruise night and was reminded of why I liked mine so much. Just wowed by the quality build, shape and comfort. Must have talked with the owner for about an hour; discovered we actually had a lot in common; funny how that works. To me, the new cars are nice, but just don't come close to the materials, the engineering..or soul of the older cars. Boxsters are cool and do handle well, but at the end of the day there are hundreds of thousands of them. Almost any older 911 is unique and by the numbers so are 944S2s. Try to find one and just look it over and then drive it. Make sure if you go that route though, buy a well kept one and not a fixer upper; you'll go broke. Look at some 914s, 968s or 928s? Bet you find one that will put a smile back on your face. Happy hunting! |
I miss my 86 carrera too. I did not think I would but I do. I sold it to a member here and on rennlist but he stopped posting some time back. I had a carfax that was about to expire last year or so. I ran my old 911 and it came back as failing emissions the year before and no note that it had been registered after. I just hope it is not out there rotting somewhere.
Here is the 911 in 2008. Not perfect but perfect :( http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1432991913.jpg |
I'll be selling mine and know I'll miss it. I bought it to hot rod and DE. I came to the realization I don't have the funds to use the car in that matter. I've been checking out some Miata's and surprisingly I like them.

Same hear. Realize I made a terrible mistake every time I hear that siren song of the flat 6 at WFO...
|
Let this be a warning to those of us who still have their beloved with them.
Have you hugged your 911 today? or should I say Has your 911 hugged a corner today? |

Miata's can be run at a fraction of the cost of a Porsche. However as they say Porsche there is no substitute. The Miata does however provide that small car thrill and blowing up a Miata engine is virtually unheard of. A used NC with power retractable hardtop can be had for one half to 2/3 of the new price. |

Funny, I'm not sentimental about cars at all. I always look forward. I've had an SC, a boxster and a 997S. They were all great in their own right, but there is always something else on the horizon. (In my case, my next one will likely be a standard Cayman.)
|
Sold my SC for a 996.
I love the 996, but still miss the SC. Apples / Oranges |
And btw, I went directly from owning my SC to Boxster (I owned them at the same time for a while). Boxster was the superior car IHMO. Sacrilege, I know.

I'm the same way, I love cars but they are just a means to an end... traded the 944 for a Miata... Miata is WAY less expensive to run but I preferred and miss the 944... Plotting and planning to replace the Miata at this point but have no idea when I will find funds for that move. It's replacement could be anything from a 996 to a Mustang. RE: Buying a Miata, like just about all cars it is much, much less expensive to buy something that has already been moded/hot roded... upgrades can run from reasonable the insane $$$ and the options are multitude. Possible the weak point of the Miata (other than it diminutive size) is HP, forced induction is a very popular upgrade (I believe Mazda made a turbo version but for some reason they didn't make a lot of them). |

I miss my 75 hot rod a lot too…But then I drive the 997 with the A/C on full blast and Pandora shuffling John Lee Hooker, Johnny Cash, and Jimi Hendrix (and my wife will actually ride with me), then I don't miss the hot rod so much.
Nostalgia is a habit worth breaking. |

Here's how to play. Every time someone offers X amount for your 911, counter by double jack.
|
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the thread title. "I didn't thin I would miss my 911.". Yeah, I just don't get that unless you play lots of pool and upgrade to a mustang ;)
I sold my 911 many years ago and when I was planning to sell it I was already missing it and planning to buy another Porsche. I still do miss that 911 and wish I could get another one, but my boxster is also a fantastic car. |
We all know that a green Bullitt Mustang is the only substitute for a 911!

IMO the Boxster combines the positive qualities of the 911 and 944 in a nice little package. Lots of storage space, good fuel economy, easy to live with, the controls are light, climate control that works, with a little flat six singing away inches behind you. Adding a hardtop transforms the experience even further. |
I have a very nice example of an SC in the garage, I have a Boxster that I drive every day, they are both their own cars and have very little in common.
I have thought about selling my SC but then I sleep on it and decide that the only thing it eats is space and insurance money so it really doesn't cost me anything to keep it. (she is tax free and antique tagged so no DMV fees either) Would someone who misses and old SC be happy in a newer car, yes and no. Yes they could really enjoy the car but it is no replacement. |
My 911 substitution...it's what I can afford

I can relate. Back in '02 I sold two Porsches to fund a house purchase - got strong prices but took a big bath regardless. Within a few weeks I was jonesing hard. After all the checks cleared I scraped to buy a 914 which was a screamin' deal and haven't been Porsche-less since and hopefully won't be again.

The current owner of 'my' old '69 E lives just over an hour away. From time to time I see it on the road or parked on a street. Sigh!
In truth I wasn't driving it, so it was time to move on. Best Les |
What I don't understand is why you cannot just buy another SC targa for the same $$ or close to what you sold yours for 6 months ago?

Of course you can afford amother one. You just need to go for it! I wish I kept my SC - but then at least I have a good replacement for it ;). G |
I sold this seven years ago. I would love to have it now, not just for it's value increase but it was just such fun to drive. Have no regrets selling it as the money went to fund my boys kart racing. Got to travel the country as a family and have memories that will last forever. Had 93,000kms on it when I sold it I think. Worth $130-$140K here now.

I sold mine almost 2 years ago and miss her almost weekly. I have a new Audi S3 that would out perform the old girl in every category except one.......SOUL

I'm buying some property soon. Selling my 993 for $45K or whatever its worth would be a great way to scare up some more cash to apply towards the property. Its the smart thing to do: 993 value is high currently, my payment would be lower, and I would save money on insurance and have more room for motorbikes. But I would never do it. The Porsche is a part of my life and not worth sacrificing. Some things are just irrational, I suppose.
|
They are just cars. Some days I wish I had my '86 back - but compared to my '03 996 it was really dated. Loads of character...but as a DD dated. When I sold the '86 I thought if I wanted another it would be no problem - they grow on trees here in SoCal. But that was before the big ramp up in prices. So I'll never have another air cooled 911 in my life time. Lots of other neat stuff to consider though. Motorcycles, bicycles, investment property, spoons, lots of stuff to enjoy out there!

I do have a lots of toys to keep me busy but my targa was special. I just forgot how special when another toy caught my eye.
