Poll: Cutting your grass.

Which method do you use?

I used to do the straight lines till I noticed my lawn guy used the Zamboni method.

Tried it myself and I think it makes more sense so have been doing it that way for years now.

Alternating straight one week diagonal the next to never leave ruts or tire wear patterns 2.5 acres of lawn, bushes and trees on the long runs it starts to look worn if you don't change it up

This year my Craftsman mower would not start, some kind of electrical problem. I have about 1 acre. Meantime I had a guy cut it. $30 bucks with trimming. This gets me thinking, 1+ hour for me, 20 minutes for him, hmmmm, I'm getting older and more amd more don't like cutting. This guy might be back next week too.

I go in circles around every tree and flower bed. The circles just get larger and larger.

I'm a rebel.
Some weeks Zamboni, some weeks straight lines.

In Queensland, in summer, on a quiet day you can hear the grass growing, so lots of practice the last few months.

I cut straight lines in some places, and go Zamboni on the bigger areas. Mine is a tough yard to cut. I mow about 5 acres with lots of random trees, steep-ish hills, a 2 acre pond that's spring fed, so up at the shallow end, the ground is always mushy and the grass there always grows like wildfire.

I run the JD 425 for about 4 hours, then the push mow under the fruit trees, and close to the back porch and patio for another hour. I finish up with the weed eater along the water's edge, around the tree trunks, and edge the flower beds for another hour and a half.

If we have enough rain in the summer, this happens every weekend.

I typically start with the zamboni, or racetrack, method.
It's only about 3 acres, which equates to about 8 beers.
Toward the end I'm usually just freestylin' - unless I stick to 3.5% beers.

This week I had to quit mowing when I was about half done. Ran out of beer.

I do the same. I have 3 acres to mow. Sometimes, I get silly, and cut it like it is 4 separate lawns, but most of the time, I will go diagonal one week, opposite diagonal next week, then straight lines, then straight lines perpendicular .
The zamboni method never seems to work out , by the time I have gone 5 or 6 lines in, I am just making big circles

Straight lines but I alternate direction season to season. Last season I followed the curve of the bayou/creek that runs through my property. This season I am going fore and aft from front to back. 4.5 acres of which about 2 is St. Augustine.

Mow with a very used Gravely ZT48XL zero turn. Getting ready to replace some oil seals, blades and bushings in the front casters. I wanted to have it all done before the season started but we went from mild to hot, so the grass has been growing pretty good since late February.

This season I added a trashcan pushmower (no joke, it was in the neighbors trash) to get in and around tree stands and bushes as I was tearing the grass up with the big mower. Re-tied the starter cord and rebuilt the carb and she's good to go.

Two laps around the perimeter, then I do straight lines through the yard but I skip a row each time, then come back and mow the skipped rows. That way I don't have to slow down for turns.

Two perimiter laps then straight lines with Kubota 2360 then touch up in tight spots with 20 year-old 21" Snapper that won't die. Touch-up takes 2x as long as mowing.
