So I advertised a car for sale on line.....

I have advertised one of my convertibles for sale on line with Autotrader and received 4 text messages requesting me to send engine pictures to their email account. I asked one of them if I could just text them......they said no to please email. I then started receiving others wanting me to respond via email.....

What is the scam here? Why do they want me to respond via email? What does this give them other than my email address? What am I missing?

I have had 4 requests so far and 1 request to send me money via Paypal without seeing the car. This is obviously a scam......

What is this about?
Thanks

I would have to see them via email because I refuse to get a "smart" phone. So there is that angle.

But they specifically wanted engine pics sent to their gmail account. The messages were almost identical.
Never considered not having a smart phone.....

Send a message via AIM to Gogar
Either someone wants to buy your car and see pics of the engine, or someone is going to make a fake ad with your engine pics.

I always text back to please call if you're interested in the car. Real buyers will probably want to talk on the phone, or in person if close by.

Yes I can certainly add the pictures to my add, but my worry is that they are somehow wanting my email for some reason. Basically I do not think it is a coincidence that all these requests, worded almost exactly the same, have come to me without some scammer activity.....

Am I just being paranoid???
Thanks guys!

This^^

That ad needs a LOT more pics and preferably bigger, higher resolution and less blurry. (nice car BTW)

And yes I need better pics!!!
I am looking for pretty strong money for the car, but it is a really nice example of an e30 vert.

Adding pics to the ad doesn't change the odds that the photos will be reused elsewhere... These days selling a car has become a total PITA. Scammers, fake certified checks, fake ads using your stuff...

I have a nice long hood 912 I will be selling soon, and I dread the process...I'm seriously thinking consignment at a known dealer just for peace of mind, despite the added complication and cost...

If I had a dollar for every pixel in your pictures I'd have 75 cents.

If someone wouldn't email me pictures of their car/engine I would be worried about them and not buy the car.

If you are that concerned about sharing your email, set up a new address at one of the free email providers then close it when the car has sold. You can't sell a car online without email. I've on several occasions ended up selling cars to people that I was 90% sure were scamming me. Let's face it, good grammar and communication is not an internet strong suit.

BTW, totally agree on the pictures. Buy/borrow a good camera, take a bunch of pictures, host them online somewhere free like Photobucket or Imageshack. That way when somebody requests pictures, you just email them a link. Pictures sell cars online.

I recently asked my g/f to email me info off a business card that she had.
She took a photo of the card w/her iPhone and sent it to my iPhone.
I had to use an eye loupe to read it.
Pissed me off...and told her so.
.
Email photos, please.

-Watermark the pics with "6/11/15 for sale xxxxxx@gmail.com",
-Save as .jpeg,
-Convert to .bmp then back to .jpeg with irfanview (this solidifys the watermark, plus removes all your personal .exif location data).

The pics now belong to you. Scammers can't use them.
