Getting a fixed wing license is very cheap in the over all scope of things.
2k ? If you buy a certed A/c at near the right price, as the economy - maybe- perhaps, recovers, you might make money on it . You do not want to start out droning along low and slow..(unless it is a helicopter) Its a recipe for stall with zero for recovery.

Flying any multi-engine airplane technically requires a class rating. In accordance with 61.63(c), you must receive training and take a practical test (checkride).
The way I read their FAQ, they are not saying a class rating is not required.... they are saying that their aircraft will not satisfy all needs of the training requirements to obtain the class rating. IE: Their props do not feather. edit: Looks like dar636 and others beat me to the info. Same recipe for the helicopter.... a lot of low & slow cruizing in the "dead man curve" may eventually bite you. For the record, I'd rather have an engine out in a Cub at 300' and 30kts than in a helicopter at 300 & 30.

I know what the curve is...My point of course- the advertisement video makes it look all too kool to be cruising along low and slow.
The danger of a wing stalling and dropping is way higher then a engine failure.( imho)

As with any aircraft, it's all about the pilot's attitude toward safety and tolerance for risk. Flying low and slow can be a spectacular experience and relatively safe IF you're in the appropriate aircraft, over the right terrain and in the right conditions. Faster, larger and more powerful aircraft in the wrong hands are not necessarily a recipe for safer flying...lots of variables to consider! Regardless, a good day of flying is hard to beat!!

So, would this AC be a good choice for his first go around?
Its a lot to bite off for the first whack. Dual engines, landing on H20 It could be done...........

I would agree...not a great choice for a first/instructional A/C. Too many variables IMO. The traditional "fixed gear single" route is tried and true.
If flying is an unfulfilled dream, go out to the local airport and ask around about instruction options, you may be surprised that it is not necessarily as expensive or difficult as you may have thought. Or call AOPA and ask about their Let's Go Flying program. But don't delay! It's never too late to learn to fly!! |

I always tell people 'buy a cheap cert AC like a 150 with time left on engine .
If you love that move on, if not sell at no great loss.

To get a LSA or rec pilot you aren't required to get the 40 hours as you do for a regular PPL. I believe LSA is 20 hours total.
