Shop A/C - upgrade exisitng unit or add a new one?

My shop is 25x25 with 10' walls and a peaked ceiling. Right now I have a 10k BTU window-mount A/C unit that just really isn't up to the task. If it's 100° outside, it will bring the shop temp down to ~80°; if it's 105° outside, it's 85° inside. The shop is fully-insulated - even the door.

The A/C unit is mounted in a custom-made opening rather than a window.

I bought a 15k BTU unit, and I'm torn between just replacing the existing unit or adding a 2nd one. The existing one will be a PITA to get out and to mod the hole, but at the end of the day, I just have one hole. If I add a 2nd hole, I can just run one or the other, but I think both running at the same time might be overkill.

Both units are 110v; it would be an even bigger PITA to get 220v to where it needs to be.

Thoughts?

Well, it's a moot point - the new one won't fit in the same area as the old one; there's some external constraints preventing expanding the existing opening enough.

OK, what about a floor model that vents to the outside via a dryer-vent-sized hose?

I went ahead and opened a new hole on the other side of the shop. This unit seems to be of much higher-quality than the old one, so I may just remove the other one and close up the hole.

Those window units come in handy - especially the 110v models.

I have a small one in my living room, even though I have central air, to supplement if need be or if my main unit goes down I have backup. I also have a larger capacity one sitting in a box I can sit in another window in all of 2 minutes should I need more backup.

I also have a mini-split ductless still in it's box to install in the garage one day. Until then I only work in the garage in the mornings and just use a floor fan.

It's heating up.......gotta go into survival mode!!!

It was 105° last Friday; today only hit 90-something.

However, you have humidity - we don't.

The new unit is quieter than the old one, and on a mild day like today it had the shop cooled off in no time.

Yes - and we have a saying in Florida. It's not the heat....it's the humidity."

You wear it like a blanket.

Glad to hear your new unit is doing the job. Stay cool!
