rarest factory porsche
FTL Carrera Targa, less than 250 were produced in three years of production. A sleeper with all of the 930 except for motor, carrying true 911 serial numbers and technically the last of its kind. Also carrying the last true fuch wheels in their largest and rarest size. It was porsche who invented the target which has been copied by almost all manufacturers. It is also the only Porsche create with a built in roll bar, the Targa. For 1988, last year produced with unsold ones carrying 1989 year there were less than 50 produced for the world. 1988 has the last update which I believe was to the Targa top.

The 911 SCRS had much lower production numbers. I believe only 20 were made and sold to the public.

Seems funny to say but they made 'many', 'one' of a kind.
Special order builds, paint to sample to even very few leather to sample (not even in the dealer order spec code). Should add, sold to the public and based on a production model / chassis. The trick to getting one was having patience and ordering from a dealer who had a larger allocation. There was some favoritism to volume franchises.

I assume you mean rarest production Porsche, as the factory made many one-off prototypes.
I'm not sure it's the very rarest, but with 8 produced, the Gmund Cabriolet has got to be close.

I think you might find the 968 Turbo RS is considerably rarer..Only 4 made..
Only 4 were ever produced ; 1 Guards Red (WPOZZZ96ZNS820065), 1 Speed Yellow (WPOZZZ96ZPS896061), 1 Black (WPOZZZ96ZPS896062) and 1 White (WPOZZZ96ZPS896063) |

There is a thread on the net of pictures of the museum storage area where several "one offs" are kept.
To me the 914 8 the factory built has to be the most rare.........Only 914 to come from the factory with a hood badge. ![]()

Ya your right. I forgot about the silver one. Both were 3.0 cars, one was detuned for the street (silver).

Rare Porsche FTL
I do enjoy Targas, purchased first one brand new in 73, one of first with CIS. Porsche has many many special Porsches. Custom orders such as paint to sample is nice, but it is not a rare production auto. Most RS Porsches are definitely rare. The FTL Targa produced from 85 through 88 with left overs being called 89 year is rare and a sleeper. it was meant to be a higher production auto but few were purchased, most buyers went for the Cabs and perhaps over 6,000 of them were sold around the world but less than 250 of the Targas were sold. Few coupes as well with perhaps 1,000 of them produced.
These autos sold for a lot of money I their day. An 1988 FTL Targa had a sticker price of $64,000.00 which was well over $20,000.00 more than a regular 911 Carrera Targa to realistically make it a 930 minus the motor only. In early 80s Porsche stopped importing the 930 Turbo, especially into the USA, apparently it was too much trouble to make it pass smog requirements yet many wanted the 930 turbo. People actually created their own 930 turbo from a regular 911 body costing far more than a turbo from the factory would have sold for. Porsche saw this taking place so they wanted in on the profits. Porsche was not allowed to sell the 930 Turbo in the USA but they were allowed to sell it minus the Turbo motor and have everything else the same down to the smallest detail as long as it was shipped with a regular Carrera motor. Once in the USA, many of those purchasing the FTL Porsches took the Carrera motor out and put in its place the turbo motor which they could get separately. Many of these autos then went on the track, many were destroyed over time. These FTL Porsches are all rare with the Targa being the most rare, the Coupe next and the Cabriolet and the Speedsters had high production number as are easy to fin for sale, though each of these models are increasing in price for many reasons. one, these FTL are rare compared to the thousands of Porsches produced. Two these were special purpose autos designed to fill a gap and actually, because the serial number were same as the regular 911 made these autos far superior, especially in handling. Many of the FTL over the years had modified their motors for more power and many converted to a full 930. The prices of the 930 are going HIGH, take a FTL and put in the turbo motor and you have a 930, many of the 930s sold are as such really grey market Porsches. Yet on their own, the FTL from 85 through 89 is also going up with prices going from $60k plus and climbing as more learn about what these FTLs really are. Most people do not understand the FTL since there was a special market for them initially. the best ones are the ones produced from 1987 since these had the G50 transmission and the widest Fuchs, real Fuchs ever made to date, plus they had all the Factory improvements. The last improvement was made in 1988 on the Targa for the roof. The FTL is not only a rare Porsche it is also the last of the reall 911 (built initially in 1964) before they changed and went to the 964 and 993. The 993 brought back the air cooler motor but it had a different serial number and was not one of the original 911's fully evolved which is one of the reasons Porsche is so exclusive. If you find a FTL for sale it is usually a Cabriolet and many have less than 100,000 miles on them, realize low mileage older Porsches usually require a full rebuild of the motor and the suspension to enjoy on the road. Always test drive them because no two drive the same, in those days, these autos were HANDBUILT and it took months to produce one. By the time the 993 came about Porsche was producing a number of them per day via automation. Aside from some of the Special autos like a GT or 918 89 was the last of the hand built Porsches. Take something like the Targa and then there is even more history because it was Porsche who first created a Targa body which also led to T-Tops for some manufacturers etc. Then add the FACT that the Targa was the only Porsche built with a Real Roll Bar in place. The rear window on the Targa also made for No Blind Spots while driving, the rear window was monstrous. By the time Porsche brought the 930 Turbo back into the USA, around 1988, there was not much difference in performance between the regular 911 motor and the Turbo motor. The FTL actually had a little advantage because you could order them with few options, the 930 turbo came with all options like headlight washers etc, all adding weight to the 930 thus slowing it down ever more. I feel Porsche pioneered the Turbo motor and it has come a longs ways. Today Porsche still has a strong turbo motor but auto like a McLaren (any McLaren) and now the Ferrari 488 are pushing the Turbo "S" out of the way and even though Porsche can take them off the line since Porsche has 4-wheel drive, the lead is totally and significantly lost once the autos come close to 100 mph until the Porsche Turbo S is nothing but a blur in the competitions rear view mirror and on the track the Porsches are lapped by McLarens and Ferraris etc. Still, Porsche has the history, it was Porsche who was the leader, plus they built an auto which was reliable and could be used everyday. it was not until 2011 late that a McLaren could also be driven everyday with the advent of the MP4-12c, the only MP4 ever to be referred to as a Formula I auto to also be used for the road and given the respect as being the First ALL McLaren hand built for the world for not much more than a Porsche Turbo S and titled as an auto for the True Enthusiast. Ferrari makes a nice auto with the new 488 but like most all Ferraris but the FF these Ferraris are not really allowed more than 3,000 miles on them before the prices drop like a rock. Most new Ferraris are sold at a lower price than one which is used. A new purchaser of a Ferrari special orders the auto, gets to drive it for a year as long as they do not put on more than 3,000 miles and then the dealership buys it back from them and all the original owner pays is tax and license for the auto, the auto itself is FREE to the original owner. in some ways it is a scam put on by Ferrari, in other ways it is a way to allow the rich to become richer and better enjoy all the best stuff in the world without spending any money. They say there are no Free rides in the world, lol, there are, especially when it comes to certain autos. |

Who really knows how many 'specials' for Piech and family were built, but there certainly more than one VW 914/8. Now whether one considers it a Porsche is for the cousins to fight about.
Also, I don't even know how one would describe some builds. We don't even know a fraction about the factory specials based on production chassis and shipped to the mid-East.
