Today's selection: casual flojos leather.

I don't like open toed shoes for safety reasons. There are many occasions even during spare time where something may hit your toes! Also want to be able to walk significant distance and run at any time to get out of an emergency situation. This is especially true when in a car and airplane and in public places. SoCal is super laid back ... Until the next good shaker ...

I remember passing a wreck on the interstate where a little dog had jumped out of the car and was running down the median along oncoming traffic - and a guy several hundred feet behind it "running" after it in his flip flops ... Not sure if he was able to fetch the dog before it got run over ... I remind my family of this when we travel and everyone wears shoes ...

I think subconsciously, I look down on old grown men who walk around with shorts, t-shirt and filp flops.

They look like they never grew up, have some sort of chemical imbalance, or are not to be trusted with important things.

Part of this is because I am an employer I think, and I spot things that suggest a person is lazy or sloppy, and going out in public without shoes or at least more sophisticated version of flip flops, like those action sandals or Addidas slip on sandals is just one of those superficial things that sort of say "lazy slob".

I think another is that my sloppy Hakujin fat-ass brother in law always looks like Chris Farley with flip flops, shorts, and t-shirt. And he's really sort of an arrogant loser. I find that sooner or later, I let my disdain for these types to show.

Sounds like a personal problem........

I learned a long time ago not to judge someone by what shoes they wear. Some of the most driven and successful people I know you would judge as a "lazy slob".

bivenator 06-22-2015 02:34 PM

Here are my favorites, I wear these to travel, cut the grass, pretty much wherever I please. I always catch the ladies checking me out on elevators. I hadn't really considered the sexiness factor until reading this thread and then it dawned on me as to what was going down.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1435012418.jpg

WOW! That is a significant prejudgement (aka prejudice). Let's turn this around. Some of the flakiest and most insecure people I know never leave the house without designer jeans and Prada loafers. Most of which, in my experience, live with a high-level of insecurity about their appearance or debt due to the need to be fashion current or to appear successful.

When I see a 50+ guy walk into a restaurant, or pull up in a Porsche wearing flip-flops and cargo shorts, I assume he must be extremely confident, secure with himself, and could not care less what others think of him.

I run in a pack of early retired guys. Every one of us dresses in cargo shorts and flip flops, so much so that my wife calls it the "Retired Guy's Uniform".

I hardly think a retired surgeon, retired nephrologist, and a cashed out Clinical Laboratory owner with a Ph.D could be called "lazy slob".

Guilty. But, in my defense, I only do it occasionally, and with the express intent to annoy my wife :D

I do wear flip flops; more so recently than in the past. I guess all those years of keeping my feet cramped up in combat boots, and now in dress shoes every day...it's kinda liberating. Like someone else mentioned, I have the type that goes between the toes, and the kind that go over the toes. The over the toes ones, I use for the drive to/from softball games so I don't have to wear my cleats in the car.

Actually, your group sounds like lazy slobs. No, they were not lazy slobs to get where they are, but yes, they are lazy slobs now. Your MS cytogenetics investment banker dresses LIKE. A. LAZY. SLOB.

If I dress well at work (business casual most days where I'm at), why would my attire after work lead one to believe I'm lazy? FWIW, I'm 38, live in Arizona, and thus spend most of the summer (during my off time) wearing shorts, T-shirts, and flip flops.

I used to know a multimillionaire entrepreneur/ doctor. They guy is by far the most driven, ballsy, and cunning individual who I think I will ever meet, even if I live another 40+ years.

He was notorious for wearing old dress shoes that were covered in dust, a 1980s Members Only jacket (well into the 2000s) and an old calculator wrist watch. What I think held him back, and ultimately led to many failures, was too much ambition, too much drive. But his attire was not "lazy slob". More I would say "out of touch geek". If you walked into his office, and he's got to be in his 90s now, with flip flops, you'd never hear the end of it. Let's say he'd judge you for sure.

Most businesspeople I know, especially sharp ones, size people up instantly.

Yeah, people DO judge books by their covers. Yes it IS superficial.

But that's the way it is. If you want to try to succeed despite being a lazy slob, have at it. Go right ahead.

I'm gonna say.....because you look like you live outside and steal shopping carts? I dunno, what am I a mind reader?

A930Rocket 06-22-2015 02:55 PM

I wear my flip flops just about every weekend here along the coast.

Going on 36 years with the same pair. Bought them around '79 when I was visiting a friend in San Diego. They're Lighting Bolt flip flops.

Or you can pretend to be daft, gullible, impressionable, and ignorant to the ways of the world.

If you don't want to be looked at as a lazy slob, then don't appear to be one. If you don't care that people may think of you that way, then that's another subject entirely.

Please tell me that you don't scratch your balls at home. Actually, forget it. I don't care what you do at home. This is about how people look at you in public. Sorry to burst your bubble and all, but people will judge you based on how you look. I know this is a surprise to you but....

Look, you can't help but make an initial assessment when your first see someone. The wise man does not let that blind him to what is really there.

Also, dressing casually is not even close to dressing like a lazy slob. Wearing flip flops, by themselves, does not make you look like a lazy slob unless the person looking on is a pretentious prick.

You guys are too funny. I don't wear flip flops often but a few times out of the month. I seem to kick siht accidentally all the time so I try to protect my poor toes as much as possible. I only wear running shoes. Shorts and tee shirts or a button down shirt long sleeve shirt 365 days out of the year. oh yeah, cargo shorts. Fancy dinners? They can eat without me if its that serious.

look 171 06-22-2015 04:10 PM

I always get a kick out of these younger men wear their business suit and tie where it really isn't necessary just to impress, God knows who? I was as a retirement "Thing" at a local Mexican joint for an old friend who retired as a high school counselor. This young early 30s young men who took over George's job with a full suit and tie hanging himself in 100 degree heat with a beer in hand. I can see the sweat dripping down his face and he was constantly wiping the sweat off. Why not take that tie and the coat off and relax. A bunch of us are in shorts and tee shirts. To me, that's a sign of lack of confidence. Is not the presentation, it is how you conduct yourself in a certain situation. A couple of my friends who work in management (office environment) tells me to drive a cleaner newer truck and put some big boy pants similar to Rusnak suggested in his earlier post. WTF do I gotta impress?

I'm sure you're really a misunderstood precious snowflake. But people really do go by their impression of you, as superficial as that may be.

You either choose to just accept it, or make a better impression. These are not my rules, it's just how it is.

porsche4life 06-22-2015 04:25 PM

I wear flip flops, shorts, and a ball cap nearly every day in the summer that I'm not working. I dress for success at work, but when I'm off, I don't give two ****s what anyone thinks of my clothes. I dress for my comfort not your preconceived notions.

I've met some guys that you would consider to dress like slobs, who could buy you several times over without blinking an eye.

Sorry, never judge someone based on what they wear or drive. Some people don't give a crap about what others think of them, usually its because they are sitting on a fat bank account and are fine with life on their terms. I'd rather deal with a rich guy in shorts, than a wannabe rich guy in a cheap suit...

rusnak 06-22-2015 04:28 PM

Sidney, I'm building $5M worth of property for myself right now. And even I have to admit that it's important what others think. That's part of being a grownup.

Nostril Cheese 06-22-2015 04:31 PM

Wow, $5M of property? Really?

Boy howdy. you're a real success. Lemme tell ya.

I have friends who would take a bullet for me. Thats real success.

This. Until a nasty bout with plantar fasciitis, I would have never made flip flops my first choice. I simply had to have arch support every time I put weight on my foot and flip flops are the most convenient way to do that. Now they're about all I wear when even remotely appropriate. The best ever for arch support were the Solomon RX series but they are no longer made. Olukai are my current go to flip flops specifically the Hokua. -J
