Moving to Tennessee?
I currently live in SoCal and might have an option to move to the Murfreesboro area. I know that this forum has folks all over the place and was wondering if anybody can offer insight to the area.
Thanks, Dave |

It will be a bit of culture shock to a SoCal boy, but Murf is one of the fastest growing small cities in America. Being down the road from Nashville will give you plenty of options for entertainment. It will be a much slower pace of life than what you're used to, but will probably grow to love it and never want to go back to Kalifornia. The people are friendly and have an easy going mentality.

I would only consider it if you are born and raised in the US. Extra points for being white. I also would keep my SoCal real estate and rent it out. I know quite a few people who thought it was awesome to buy some big house out-of-state in exchange of their California home. Now they can't come back because the big out-of-state house pricing is flat and California real estate has doubled since ...
I have lived in the south. I'm an immigrant. I'm not Christian. I was never "one of them". I left for CA when I started a family. I will never go east of the Rockies again. ![]() YMMV of course ... G |

Get used to saying hello to everyone you see. Ditch the idea that if they look at you they want something from you. Refreshing!

Sounds good Dave! I would still recommend a trial phase in terms of real estate. I know several people moving, witth the same cons for California, who were ready to come back a few years later. One thing people don't see going in is the lack of jobs in a lot of these areas. Once you lose the one that brings you there, options may be limited.
Don't know your situation but real estate in TN is so much cheaper you should be able to buy a house from scratch - at least a decent starter home - and keep the California one until yore sure ... Keep us posted on the adventure and good luck! G |

Living here is terrible!
Clean air. Uncongested roads without pot-holes. Minimal taxes. Low cost of living. Beautiful scenery. Four (count them 4) seasons. Very few PC nazis. Friendly people. Don't move. We don't need no fer-in-ers.

![]() For me living in the Murfreesboro area would be great since I really like Nashville and the surrounding country side. The area is really beautiful. Nashville is the deal. The only downside for me is the humidity. I have yet to get used to wading through air thick enough to use as a condiment.

The main down side to renting out my house is the rental laws in cali SUCK. Not sure I could be a distant LL anyway. Once I leave here I and my wife have absolutely no reason to come back. The family that is here is one of the reasons we want to leave. We do have family in AZ, NV and IN.
Thanks everyone for the input so far. Dave |

The only worry I would have, besides my well documented hatred of all things related to high relative humidity, is that Nashville and Murfreesboro are a 3 Wood and a Wedge from anything remotely different. You are in the heart of the hilly South and Midwest.
I like the South and you will no doubt enjoy Tennessee. But, from Murfreesboro, you are a 6 plus hour car drive to the coast...draw a 400 mile arc around Nashville and you will soon understand that flying will be your best friend. Again, I love where I live and wouldn't even consider moving except for air so wet and dense three months a year you don't so much breath it you swim in it.

The people I meet that are here from other areas love it here. And there are lots of them. From everywhere. Sometimes it seems that native Tennesseans are a minority. That being said, I would agree that a trial run is always a good idea before making any permanent decisions.

Do you drink Bud Light and/or smoke Marlboro? Does your wife look good in a halter top and daisy duke's, or in a confederate bikini?

Big estates with white picket fences containing expensive walking horses and plenty of cedar trees. So many cedars that I understand it was once the pencil capital of the world.

Well.... you own a Harley, so you may be able to get away without the Bud Light and Marlboro prerequisites. As long as you promise to rev it incessantly like a jackass at every possible opportunity.

I live in Calif. and just got back last night from spending a week in Missouri. 100 miles south of
Kansas City. I know, it is not Tenn. but I got to see a different culture of us Americans. It is true... everyone is friendly, no gangs, no graffiti, a lot of beer drinkers. Every turn off of the Hi-way will be a Church, Guns & Ammo, and a liquor store. Amish, with horse & buggy trotting along the shoulders of the roads. Armadillos, big shiny black snakes on the shoulders also. Really nice 2000 sq ft homes with basements on acres of land for 200K. Lots of rain and humidity. A lot of unemployment and a lot of mobile homes with rusted out trucks scattered around too. But I fell in love with the slow life and how everyone knows and helps each other out. At least the community where my sister and brother-in-law have their farm. I wouldn't mind leaving Calif. for what I saw in that part of Missouri anyway. Will have to go back in the winter for a second opinion. |

I also enjoy going to Martinsville In to see my dad. Much slower pace and as I get closer to retirement I like that more and more. Dave Last edited by E38Driver; 05-31-2015 at 06:54 PM.. |
