Too many

scottmandue 07-02-2015 09:35 AM

I work for the state... where shall I start?

I have two bosses right now ,work and my wife. I'm retiring from one in September ,I'm keeping the wife 😊

I'm my own boss, which isn't as great as it sounds. I can't tell my boss to f-off and quit, I can't ask for a promotion or a raise, I can't call in sick. I don't know when I've had a vacation day when I didn't do something for work.
I wouldn't work for anyone else, but my boss is killing me.

I lied. Actually I have many bosses, but whenever they would ask me one of their inane questions, I'd let a bit of drool come out of the corner of my mouth and give them the "thousand yard stare". They quit bugging me and now I'm the Master of my own domain.

I work in DoD. I have LOTS of "bosses." In my little realm, though, I'm the boss. I have a great team that works very well together, and we accomplish great things, so my "bosses" ask us for something, and then leave me the hell alone.

2, one at home, one at the office.

gtc 07-02-2015 01:34 PM

Just one.

Which is one too many.

devodave 07-02-2015 06:28 PM

6 or 7 between me and the POTUS.

aap1966 07-03-2015 03:15 AM

One official boss.
He regards one of us with contempt.
It's the only area in which we agree.

Not quite my own

It's almost like I'm my own boss however I'm employed by a large American co. which trades on the NYSE valued at approx. $12B. I'm the senior engineer in Canada of a small group contracted to another big Canadian co. We're only 7 engineers and 2 administrators in Canada. I'm alone in my province. My boss lives on the U.S. East coast. My boss actually consults with me whenever projects get put together. I'm Mon-Fri 8 hours (on paper) per day. I'm also on call 24/7 and am paid for that too. My base $ is 6 figures, plus my stand-by pay and overtime. No, I'm not management but rather hourly employee.

I have a fair amount of vacation time built up, so I came in to work on Monday and wanted to get some stuff done around the house. I sent off an email to my boss telling him I would be taking the rest of the week off. I put new brakes on my Pcar and also was home for the tile setter re-doing the ensuite bathroom.

As long as I get the job done and the client is happy, my boss basically gives me all the room in the world. I've been at this job 14 years and hope to keep it to retirement.

I've done the self employment thing years ago and realized I'm not a business man, I'm a good engineer and do that to the best of my abilities. Someone once told me not to chase the money, but rather do what I like to do. That way, even if the pay sucks at least you're enjoying the work, and eventually someone will recognize the quality of your work and pay you for it. That's pretty much how it worked out.

scottmandue 07-03-2015 11:25 AM

Lets see... there is the fender Jazz, an SG, a Hondo... oh you said BOSSES...
Nevermind!

A930Rocket 07-03-2015 12:04 PM

One

TechnoViking 07-03-2015 12:11 PM

I have two bosses. I sleep with one and I whore myself out to the other one.

M.D. Holloway 07-03-2015 04:36 PM

My boss is the best. Zero problems zero regrets zero drama.

cstreit 07-03-2015 09:12 PM

You should only have one boss.

If other mgmt is reaching out to you directly, or reaching g down thru the ranks that's a huge problem. It creates a lot of anxiety and disfunction. It's usually a sign that the others don't trust each other....

Excellent advice!

I work for a 250 Power Unit trucking company owned by two brothers. I am lucky that I pretty much just answer to one of the owners. And he pretty much leaves me alone. I have an odd unique job with the company. Been here longer than most and most have no clue who I am.
