Haha! Just as I bought my Ram 1500 Ecodiesel. Better plan on keeping it! Selling it will be impossible after these news! So far so good > 1k miles on 2 tanks and running great.

I had to check and make sure I don't have the "uconnect" that lets some pimply hacker drive the truck from their basement.

I heard about that on npr. I known for years that they have been in the grey area about the fuel tank issue, and simply just adding a hitch setup to get around that recall...

I wonder if that's going to kill the resell on the older the quarter tons?!

How can a steering issue be that bad in modern truck that they can't fix it? Love to know the details.

Haha - I had a 97 4.6 - bloody arms every time I changed plugs on that pig!

I'm also puzzled they could not engineer a fix. Nowadays you can buy aftermarket kits for just about anything- a re-engineered steering and front suspension assembly sure sounds better than buying back vehicles!? Maybe they hoped for just dodging the recalls?

I read they would buy back the vehicle (with depreciation), fix it and sell it again.

That's scary.

I suspect resale value will tank on the used ones because of this. Very curious how fair their offers for buy back will be.

This--sheared tie rod.

That is an "updated" piece which was already replaced under recall--this is from a RAM 3500 crew-cab diesel 4x4, which we bought new--biggest POS truck we have ever owned--can't wait to sell it back since it now just sits at our shop since it is too unreliable to send out of state. That tie rod sheared pulling out of site while towing a loaded trailer--luckily not at speed. F Fiat Chrysler they deserve this.

It's always "How can we fix this ***** the cheapest / quickest way under voluntary recall?" It's always the ***** way out for a lot of manufacturers - this time though they failed too many times in the process for something that's so critical.

I agree with all the above statements .........except for one vehicle they produced. I love it!!- have a little over 100K and have had very little issue with it

Prolly the best thing for Chrysler and Jeep was the Daimler influence / engineering.........

I feel for the owners who have (rare, but relatively) trouble-free cars, not covered by the recalls, but will still watch the value of their cars plummet, simply by association.

Daimler sold Chrysler in 2007 and Fiat came on board in 2009, so much of these issues have little to do with Fiat. They undoubtedly originate from the Daimler days and one could even argue that they are home made = US made.

As a new RAM owner this does worry me that this is such a mess. It will make getting any attention on quality issues or recalls on any model tough, even brand new ones. I do like my truck a lot so far, i think they have come a long way, especially on drive train and interior. The diesel is Italian and the transmission German. My plan is to run >10 years / >200k, so resale is not a big concern.

1994 = Last reliable year.
1972 - 1980 were my favorites.

The 1998 I owned was mostly OK.
The 2001 had constant problems.
The 2002 I own now also has constant problems and will be my last Ram. (unless I buy an old one)

I posted this thread back in 2013: Looks like...

I no longer own that Jeep but told the new owner about the recall and the fix. I still have a newer Jeep GC that has not received any recall yet. The linked story was vague as to what Chrysler/Fiat was doing about newer Jeep GC's with the same gas tank issue. That story seems to think that someone that has a 20 year old Jeep Grand Cherokee worth around $2k or less will take its value as a trade in on a new Chrysler product. Don't think I would have traded my older Jeep in on anything new from Chrysler. It was a winter beater... not a $20k+ winter beater...
