Do you have Tom Brady balls? Or, how fast have you had your Porsche?

It wasn't mine, but I drove a '72 911S 140 mph on a deserted stretch of I-5 in Northern California. It belonged to our family doctor who was in the passenger seat, and encouraged me to drive as fast as I was comfortable. The car seemed to sink down an inch or two at about 110 mph, and it really didn't seem that fast at 140, mainly due to the fact that it wasn't jumping around over the expansion joints and road bumps.. The car handled the surface as if it was on rails. He said he had had it above 160. Let's hear your "Bonneville with asphalt" experiences. The winner will be declared the proud owner of an elephantastic scrotum.

No tail so my 911 becomes a bit unstable at a buck 20....I did have my old Supra Turbo up to 140 in the middle of the Okeefenokee Swamp years ago...man was that car PLANTED to the road when I realized I did NOT have Brady balls :D

dewolf 07-30-2015 04:32 AM

Had my 951S that had been slightly modified to an indicated 290kmh and my 930 to an indicated 280kmh. Scary stuff.

javadog 07-30-2015 04:33 AM

I hate to be a buzzkill but a '71 911 S wouldn't clear 160. Or 150. It might have gotten near 140 on a really good day. Might have been a little speedo error in that one, or the good doctor was just full of ****.

mattdavis11 07-30-2015 04:40 AM

120, it felt like the front right was skipping over the uneven pavement as I hammered through the sweeping right hand turn. I now have Tom Brady balls, but they were once those of Adam Vinatieri;)

Jim Richards 07-30-2015 04:41 AM

I doubt the speed claim, as well. But, a '72 911S is a lovely car to drive on the open highway (as well as the twisties). :)

1975porsche 07-30-2015 04:48 AM

Last night 110 mph on way to the lake house. (1975 911s)

DaveE 07-30-2015 05:08 AM

Had my SC a tad over 140 (factoring in typical speedo error was probably upper 130s). Had the Box just over 135.

Got a ticket and suspension in my S4 for 120 mph, ugh.

fred cook 07-30-2015 05:17 AM

Long ago...........

And far away! Many years ago, I had a Capri RS2600 clone that was quite fast. There was a stretch of empty interstate where the boys went to see what their cars would do on the top end. One night, I had the Capri up to 7500 rpms in 4th gear which calculated out to 145 mph. At that speed, it really needed a front spoiler/splitter as the front end got very light! The car had some more on the throttle, but that was my limit! After rebuilding the 3.0 in my SC into a 3.3SS, I took it up to about 130 with lots of pedal left. Somehow, the thought of losing control of a vehicle at that speed just doesn't appeal much to me anymore. Besides, it's more fun to go fast from zero to stoplight anyway!

ckelly78z 07-30-2015 05:22 AM

I've been about 130 in my Datsun Z flat out in 5th gear. A buddy of mine had a 1971 455 Trans Am with a set of road gear in it (maybe 2.73). and we did 165 in that on a curvy two lane road. Those telephone poles sure are whizzing by in a hurry at that speed. My current 85.5 Porsche 944 with the Wilks chip and Magnaflow exhaust pulls hard to 6500 RPM in 4 gears, and I am shifting into 5th about 105 MPH.....not sure how fast it will actually go.

A930Rocket 07-30-2015 05:34 AM

Got up to 145 in my 930 going up one of the big bridges here in Charleston. Had to quit early because I didn't know what was on the other side.

Had it to 160 on the track. That was flying, especially when you had to slow down quickly for a turn.

Oh Haha 07-30-2015 05:41 AM

I may have had my SC up to 140(GPS unit indicated) but then again I may not have...;)

My old Camaro went 120 in the 1/4 mile.

sand_man 07-30-2015 05:45 AM

Not nearly as fast as was achieved in this "hall of fame" thread:

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/308711-165-mph-73-2-4s.html

GH85Carrera 07-30-2015 05:47 AM

On the TRACK at Charlotte Superspeedway is fun. I had one hour of track time total. After a fun infield you get up on the banking carefully, 2 tires on the passenger side, then two tires on the drivers side, and run it thru 3rd to redline, 4th redline and then 5th and stand on it. The next curve is a long way off but approaching fast. The track looks like is is one lane wide and I really did not look at the speedo but I do know I was well into the 5,000 RPM range in 5th. The engine is SCREAMING and the wind noise is loud. Then the instructor says whatever you do, don't hit the brakes as you are staring at a large curve. :D :D I will admit I lifted off the throttle, made the back curve, stand on the brakes drop to 70 and hit the infield again. :D:D:D:D

IT was a blast and I did pass a real factory GT2 on track that day. (OK, the owners wife was driving it at the time but the fact remains I passed a GT2!)

wildthing 07-30-2015 07:34 AM

I am invoking my 5th Amendment right.

Let's just say I mash the pedal to the metal on a short stretch of 101 less than a mile before my exit, and brake enough to exit.

"Bonneville with asphalt" experiences. >>> Does 85+ (top end) on an old BMW R50 on Hwy 99 near Fresno, CA qualify?
My buddy's Beemer...back in '64...he was standing up through his VW sunroof, his g/f driving.
We were in the military at the time...young and full of "dumb guts"!

I touched 160 a couple times in my 997S out in the wilds of Montana. Hitting 120 in that car was nothing. It would get to 150 pretty fast, but then you started to suck air. That last 30mph up to 180+ was going to take a while. It was a bit squirrely at high speed if you had a cross wind, especially if was coming from the 10:30/1:30 position.

GWN7 07-30-2015 09:03 AM

I had my Black 914 up to 125. It get's a bit light feeling after that. My son says it goes much faster.

Green6 07-30-2015 09:45 AM

Fastest, most scariest feeling I've ever had in a car was in the late '70's, doing about 100 mph [well past the 90 mph max on the speedometer] in my 1970 VW Bug in neutral, down the Grapevine. Too scared to use the brakes, and too fast to put it back in gear. Young and dumb.

dtool242 07-30-2015 09:52 AM

Floored my 928 to where the kick-down engages (an automatic) on I-55, I let up when it shifted into 4th at 125 MPH.

ckissick 07-30-2015 09:54 AM

I got it up to 120 coming out of the carousel turn at Sears Point, then had to slam on the brakes for a hard right turn. Some of you may have been there. It was the only place I could steel at quick look at the speedo. That was a fun day.

TheRedSlantnose 07-30-2015 10:06 AM

I've taken both my 930 Slant and 951 up to 140 mph a few times, but I very rarely go faster than that. However, I once got my 930 Slant up to 150 mph in 4th gear. I hadn't made it to 5th gear yet and the speed was still climbing without any hesitation, but I had to slow down because I ran out of room up ahead.

I've topped out every car I've owned, but have yet to do so with my 930 Slant and 951 :p

911dean 07-30-2015 10:45 AM

I've had my '75 Corvette in 4th gear at 6500 rpm. The math said 165. I've had enough cars with speedos registering 130+ this was a whole different level of speed.

Arizona_928 07-30-2015 10:49 AM

150ish
Way faster on bikes

How much faster? Faster than 150ish?
The fastest I've been was on a '88 Yamaha FZR1000 & a Ducati 996S.

Porsche-O-Phile 07-30-2015 11:18 AM

The turbo goes to 140 pretty easily and I'm pretty sure would clear 170 based on gearing and available power. I haven't (and probably won't) try it. It sticks well at 130-140 but I get too paranoid.

I've had a motorcycle over 140 and that's just damn scary.

You got that right...bike has to have a good frame & suspension to feel safe at speed.

Don Ro 07-30-2015 11:22 AM

So poignant, I said it twice.

Peterfrans 07-30-2015 11:34 AM

I had my 73 up to 140 going slightly downhill on the german autobahn, scarry stuff as the front gets very light. Did the same speed with the C4S and although it would have easily gone faster, the less than perfect roadsurface made it not very enjoyable as the suspension seems too firm to soak up the bumps. Driving the same speeds with my 530xd is childs play in comparison.

foxpaws 07-30-2015 11:37 AM

140 in the Caddy - yep, the Caddy (Northstars are really de-tuned racing engines, tune 'em and chip 'em and change out the cam - they rock) and I had speed to spare, but only because I was about a mile behind some guy who earlier whipped around me in a bright green GT2 like I was standing still (I was doing about 110 at that point). Old US64 - upper New Mexico.

boba 07-30-2015 11:41 AM

In a 1969 911E on a no speed limit section of NV375. Down on power a bit at approx 7000ft. I lost a bit of focus and about 10mph when talking the photo.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1438281438.jpg

Many years ago in a 1972 911T Targa with a fresh 2.7 MFI RS spec I was stopped for speeding at 3:00am on a deserted highway. Radar had me at 143mph. The officer turned out to be a nice guy.

ckelly78z 07-30-2015 11:45 AM

Have you guys seen the Youtube sensation "GhostRider" who has a 499 HP Turbo Hyabusa ? He likes to circle large cities on the outerbelt doing 180-200 mph although the speedo reads in KM, I think he hit 320 KPH. Crazy mad skills and stupidity, or maybe just a death wish.

Closed course of course;)

GH85Carrera 07-30-2015 12:08 PM

The scariest high speed drive I ever did was flat out going down a long hill in my 36 HP 1960 VW bug. I got it up to 70 and that was flying. Fortunately I was 16 and invulnerable. On level ground it would only do 60 with a tail wind.

911 Rod 07-30-2015 12:15 PM

Who the hell looks down at those speeds!

200 kmh is 126 mph?

I've had the 86 to about 240 km/h and the 996TT to at least that before realizing nothing good will come from this and let off.

At 190 my butt would be sucking the padding outa the seat, methinks.
.
160+ on '88 Yamaha FZR1000 at the track...that was pretty much my limit as far as nerve.
140+ on a deserted two lane public road...long sweeper on the Ducati 996S.
No interest in going faster...but it was available.
A few blind driveways kept me "sane". Ouch!
.
"Who the hell looks down at those speeds!"
.
Really.
The microsecond it takes seems like too long at speed on a bike.

On NV375 we were running those speeds for 30-40 min. You actually get comfortable and there are no poles or trees to create speed references.

Mike Billings 07-30-2015 12:41 PM

I was amazed how quickly the needle went past 165 mph in the 993 (stock).

The factory spec is 171 mph, but this one has the Aero Kit so it should be a lot slower.

I think these things have more speed in them than what the factory says.

Arizona_928 07-30-2015 12:48 PM

Haha yes, time slows down at that speed, but cars come up quick.
