Boxster space saver spare saves my weekend!

Was heading from Jefferson City, Missouri, to Lawrence, Kansas, on Saturday when about 60 miles from my destination my right rear tire catches something in the road and flat it goes. I can attest that the tools and spare tire in my 2001 Boxster are definitely great quality. Took me about 15 minutes to change the tire and not only did I make it the final 60 miles, but the 188 miles back home. Spare still looks new!

I don't think a can of tire sealant is going to work on that one....

Nice to have a spare.

Great! I would never buy a vehicle without a spare tire.

You are probably going to need 4 cans of goop for that one.
Just out of curiosity does your manual say to put the spare on the front and use the front on the rear?
I think I read that in my 996 manual?? It has been a few years since I studied it, need to check.
That might just be something I saw in a forum somewhere.

Send those pics to Porsche and BMW who insist on selling new cars without a spare.

It is completely ridiculous that most new sports cars come without spares and even a place to put them. No worse place to get stranded than on a tour in the local mountains / coastal areas. You could lose a day of your life waiting for someone to come by and get help. Otherwise it would be throwing on the spare and being on your way 15 minutes later. I really don't know WTF they are thinking at the car companies. Not everyone lives in Germany or some other densely populated area where cell signal is ever present and the next town is always 3 miles away.

Those are cost-saving, not space saving. There's nothing "space saving" about those little POS. And the asshat who came up with the idea of not providing for a spare tire at all should be taken out and shot.

FB111: I believe it does say to place on the front, but my thought was I'd rather have two tires the same size on the steering end of the car.

To the others: I agree, I don't understand the can of fix-a-flat replacing the spare tire. Even if I could have gotten a tow into town, there were ZERO tire shops in Kansas City that carries, in the store, a 265/35/18 tire.

Glad you had the spare. The wife and I are planning a 3500-4000 mile New England road trip at the end of the month and plan on taking the Cayman. Guess what? Cayman's were never equipped with spare tires, it does have the goo and a POS compressor in the front trunk. We have roadside assistance with the CPO warranty and AAA so I hope we don't have any tire misadventures. Granted in 20 years of driving I have only had one flat tire--damn, just cursed our trip.

Just as much as I wouldn't buy a car with no spare I don't think I'd buy a car with some goofy tire size that you can't get locally.

Thats harder than you think... I had to call all over the valley to find a match to the OEM tires on my escape... Only the dealer had one and it was almost $300 installed....
