Safety - It's in Your Hands

Seen in the men's restroom in an airplane hangar in Doha the other day:

What it like Qatar anyway? My wife had a standing offer to work there. Lets cut to the chase....is Balvenie available in ample supply?

Yep, we taught, that with test tubes of urine when my son was in the Boy Scouts, when we were camping in Death Valley.

Well, it was Ramadan, so that kind of colors one's perspective on the place. Pretty locked down; damn hard to even get a beer. It peaked at 118 degrees, but everything is air conditioned. Except for airplane hangars...

No place for non-natives to live and work. If you are not one of them, well, you are not one of them. Pretty strict laws on things we take for granted, and they take them very seriously, especially if you are not one of them...

I lived/worked there for 2 years. As far as ME countries go, it really isn't bad at all there. The people are decent (as long as you ignore the way they treat the hired help from "lesser countries"). There is a place you can buy booze; you just have to get a license of sorts. You need to prove that you make a certain amount of money, and only get a monthly "ration" of booze (and it's really expensive--like $50 for a 18 pack of Corona), so that they're reasonably assured your purchases will not end up on the black market. Make sure you stock up before Ramadan. If you're Muslim, you're not allowed to buy. There are night clubs that are pretty decent. There's golf, water recreation, etc. There's a HUGE "underground" Chinese prostitution thing there...which I found interesting since the penalty for such is pretty stiff.

The country itself is quite wealthy (relatively new wealth) and seriously take care of their own people. Everyone is "rich" so you see a lot of beautiful cars there. Unfortunately, they drive like idiots, so you also see a lot of wrecked cars there. When I was there, they had the dubious distinction of highest vehicle death rate per capita in the world.

And those signs Jeff posted are all over the place.

Those signs were posted on the inside of the Porta-Potty doors in the Canyonlands last time I was there. The catch was once you closed the door, it became very dark inside and there was no manner I could conceive where I could determine the color of my urine. I appreciate what the NFS was trying to do but ........
