We were in Yosemite Valley this past weekend. Everywhere we looked, there were selfie sticks. Here in this magnificent place people were taking pictures of - themselves! Just another sign that the apocalypse is upon us. Well, we did see one photographer using a view camera, so maybe there remains a tiny shred of hope.

Actually, in that situation, I don't really see a problem with it. When traveling, sight-seeing, whatever, I have always preferred to take a picture of what I'm seeing without people in it, but I know that it's very common for folks to prefer to be in the shot to show that they were there or as a reminder of how they looked or whatever. These days, it may seem a bit risky asking a stranger to take a shot of you with your own camera, so a selfie stick will allow you to get the shot with all of your party in it. I don't have a problem with that.

The whole selfie thing, though, has gotten out of hand. Just standing around in your bathroom, kitchen, whatever, shooting selfie after selfie is ridiculous. The photoshopping that's happening to a lot of selfies...

But hey, hanging out with friends and taking the occasional shot of you and your friends. I wish I had more photos of my friends from when I was younger.

It has honestly never occured to me to photobomb a beautiful scenery shot with my ugly mug. I have never taken a selfie, and probably never will.

We are becoming a frighteningly narcissistic society. I'm not a fan of being in pictures, and I certainly don't take them of myself.

Trying to enjoy a meal on the water in Venice a few months ago. Here comes a camera right next to my head for several minutes as this couple try to get the perfect shot. Their camera and stick almost ended up in the Canal.

This. And add to that the thousands and thousands of pictures of a plate of food.

What would these people do if there were no digital cameras? DRAW their food on a piece of paper?

EDIT: I went to the Jersey shore last year, but left my selfie stick at home:

And gaud forbid you actually SPEAK TO ANOTEHR HUMAN BEING while on vacation to have then snap a picture of you and your S.O. standing by whatever historic doo-dad.

What pisses me off even more is people at a concert filming with their camera... call me a purest but when I'm at a concert I'm there to be in the moment and enjoy the music... not to brag to my friends on social media about whatever super kewl event I'm at.

Z-man that is awesome. You look happy, and appear to have lost some weight. ...maybe a bit too much - hope you don't mind me saying.

wait, did you photochop that pic?

I ask people with dSLRs to take my pics simply because they'll know how to work my dSLR. Even though I set the correct settings beforehand.

I've always taken expensive camera gear to Mexico, France, Iceland, Curacao and all over the US. I have no issues handing my camera to other people.

A HS classmate is selling these selfie sticks. A buddy asked him to help finance the start up. So he tossed in $10K, thinking he might never see the money again. He got paid back...in 2 weeks. He jokes he's taking the profits and entering the World Series of Poker.

I would say chance of that happening in the US is next to zero. Definitely not a risk and not worth buying a selfie stick for.

Selfie stick - it is nuts. I saw a guy film himself going to Joe's crab shack a few months ago. Who's going to have to watch that?

I love the exposure to trends I get on this site.

When travelling, I will from time to time set up my DSLR for a pic of us with some notable scenery in the background. However, I will use a rock, gloves, the roof of the car, whatever, to hold the camera. No stick.

When I am in the Tidal Power plant, I take a good number of shots of folks each year while we are on the walkways above the turbine.

We don't need no stick!

Best

At this point I don't even take a camera when I travel (I do not consider an iPhone a camera). I have so many old photos at home that I haven't looked at in decades that it doesn't make sense to add to the pile. I just enjoy where I'm at when I'm there and move on.
