The "N" Word

Tonight I was waiting for the bus out in san jose when security escorts two saggy pant Mexican gang bangers off the light rail. They proceeded to repeatedly use the "N" word to describe their relationship with each other as in "You're my nigga bro".

So what is up with that? I've seen black people talk like that. They clearly are not black. And why would anyone, regardless of skin color, use that as a term of "endearment" when it is such an offensive word? Is there an alternate meaning that I an unaware of?

Offensive word? Black folks use it all the time as a term of endearment. I'm from the Detroit area, heard it all the time. But god forbid a white person say it...

The Mexican guys....well....that was some good 420 they were smoking.....

I think it's about doing something that's "cool"... Your black Americans are considered extremely cool the world over so they're often copied.

............ Their contribution to culture is extraordinary. Music, Art, Literature, you name it they've either mastered it or invented it... In general, amazingly gifted and creative people!

So is it the environment and opportunity they have available to them in the US that has made them so creative? I think it is although Africans are also very creative.
The human condition is extremely complex and interesting.

The "N" word belongs to them though so I don't think it's cool for "Mexican Gang Bangers" to use it.

Nigga and Nigger are different words with distinctly different meanings.

Blacks also use Nigger as a highly derogatory term generally to indicate someone is a low life POS and a black person calling another black person Nigger will elicite a response similar to if a white person said it.

Dude, really? I think you need to look up the definition of stereotype. I do not label every Mexican person a gang banger nor do I believe all Mexicans are gang bangers. Now had I said, "All Mexicans are gang bangers", you could absolutely accuse me of stereotyping but that is simply not the case here.

I specifically labeled these individuals gang bangers because they were tatted up and displaying their colors. The only reason I even mentioned that they were Mexican was because they were calling each other "nigga", which is material to my question.

I certainly understand the definition of stereotype, but perhaps not gang banger. Is it a gang member that takes life with no sense of remorse?

Mr. Emsley is right.

Wearing gang tats and gang colors, one might reasonably assume they belong to a gang. Of Mexican heritage is usually pretty clear, and saggy pants either are or are not saggy.

Stereotype or accurate observation? You decide.

Exactly!

Not top be confused with "Ax" and "Ask" (which actually mean the same thing).

You have to understand the urban lingo.

I predict what 930addict bore witness to is a precursor of things to come.

So pervasive is this term of endearment that it is only a matter of time, a short time (five years) before it will integrate it's self back into white culture - as with other colorful African American cultural things (see sc_rufctr's list).

My P-Car Homies, peace out.

Perhaps most cases, but not mine.

I had some very interesting neighbors at my last house and the guys who lived there, bought drugs there and/or partied there...affectionately referred to me as "their N". These individuals were of all mixed races, young white kids, Hispanic, black guys etc. Even their white girlfriend used the "N" word in reference to me.

In my opinion, it's a gross display of ignorance and double standards. To them, I was "cool", so I was an "N" too.

Which is how I ended up getting 3 of them arrested for "sale of narcotics with the intent to distribute" and they had no clue...keep your friends close and your enemy at "N" status

As with most things context is everything.

My buddy Tim around the corner is from Boston.

People in our neighborhood initially thought we did not like each other because of the way we interacted.

Guys from the NE tend to be a bit more "colorful" when interacting.

Greetings generally take the form of "insults".

A good example,

Good one, Scott. I forgot how great that movie really was on so many levels.

I actually do get my hair cut at a local barber shop - sometimes there's a patron or two waiting....sometimes no one and I walk in and sit right down in the chair....no wait!

The magazine racks have mostly car and military magazines....hell it's an American institution!

We talked about politics last time - pretty soon it will be the season to include some sports.

There's definitely an art to conversing in certain settings....

Nobody said anything about baggy trousers, although it's only one letter off, there's a difference between baggy and saggy.
