Tarantino movies, likes & dislikes

Most folks seem to REALLY like Tarantino movies. He's made, I assume, a ton of money and gotten lots of critical acclaim for his movies. I like them...

...mostly.

I think that what lots of folks really like about his movies is that he goes really over the top. I think it appeals to the juvenile in all of us. At the same time, sometimes it feels a bit gratuitous. I haven't seen them all, but I've seen several and liked them or at least parts of them. I think my favorite was From Dusk 'til Dawn. I just saw Django Unchained, and I think it was a very good movie. Pulp Fiction was good too. I also liked the Kill Bill movies. Part of what made them great is the B-movie style that he adds, but for me, sometimes I think, "yeah, we get it already." I think some spots could be toned down just a bit and the movies would be just as good, maybe even a bit better. But I'm sure that if he toned things down a bit, the movies would change and lose a bit of their appeal.

What do the rest of you think?

The opening 5 minutes of "Desperado" and the French cafe scene with Christoph Waltz and Hans Landa eating strudel. Genius at work. He gets a little bit weird though with some of his writing and directing. The guy is a full on weirdo genius.

Edit: Desperado was directed by Robert Rodriguez. I'm going to include it in my response, as Desperado is in the same B movie sort of class.

I think we probably don't know the half of it unless you know him personally. That's certainly the impression that I get.

Yep, very similar. Very good actually. I also like The Quick and the Dead.

When "PF" premiered I went to the first night's showing and went back and watched it again the second night.

Great actor ensembles....and great soundtrack scores.....

Yeah, he's definitely a nutbar, but very good at translating what's in his head to the screen. Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and From Dusk`til Dawn are definite cult-classics now. Django Unchained was good as well, but my all-time favorite has to be True Romance. Great flick (and great cast).

Good calls, I'd forgotten about True Romance and Reservoir Dogs. Both very good flicks.

Just saw django, I enjoyed despite thinking Mr tarantino is not quite right in the head for a good bit of it

It sorta reminded me of inglorious bastards but with slavers instead of nazis

Good for chit chat here. I know quite a few that DO NOT like his movies. Too bad for them.

I like how he test the extreme's. His attitude and the hell with the PC mentals. It almost seems as if he doesn't care whether one likes the movie or not. He pulls no stops. Bold, shock artsy, but they all have depth. Fine choice of actors in his flicks. His mind must be overwound. The ideas he comes up with and intensity.

The best of his I would pick (in no particular order)

Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, Reservoir Dogs, Dusk till Dawn, Jackie Brown.

Some of the Kill Bill. Pulp Fic, ok...

In an interview, DiCaprio said he had a difficult time getting in the frame of mind and against Foxx. Again though, its that intensity and throws the shock to the audience.

Walked out of pulp fiction saying "that's the greatest movie ever". Every time I've seen it since I've liked it less. Dunno why. Maybe I feel like they tried too hard...

Kill Bill is, for me, the exact opposite. Didn't love it at first and now it's one of my favorites. (could be uma in yellow leather?). It's such a fun real-life-comic-book thrill.

I loved Pulp Fiction and I think it is his best so far. Django was good - the Kill Bills, I sort of though it was Tarantino doing a parody of himself.

Inglorious Bastards, by far my fave. Pulp fiction was my fave until Inglorious Bastards came around. I became a Buscemi fan because of Reservoir Dogs. Almost every scene of the Kill Bills is a classic.

I absolutely get the impression that he doesn't care what we think. He has a vision and allows it to play out on the screen. From an artistic standpoint I respect that, he doesn't pander to the lowest common denominator.

I consider Pulp Fiction to be a modern classic.

Can Quentin do for Kurt Russell what he did for John Travolta?

Would have been a hoot if Tarentino had given him a big ol' handlebar moustache in Hateful Eight! Ha!

Oh wait! He kinda did!
