Selling everything and moving to a cabin in the woods.

(rant_on)

I swear, at times, my child is the only thing that keeps me from liquidating everything fungible and moving to 80 acres somewhere in the north woods of Michigan. I do my best to tune out the idiocy of society, but sometimes I feel like I'm in a little boat, and the waves of donkey dung are splashing over the gunwales.

I feel like the rewards of being a competent, hard working citizen are growing less and less. I swear, you're almost scorned for having a brain in your head, and not having a readily available sob story about how society OWES you.

Screw it. Liquidate it all, put it in low risk income investments. Sit on my porch and whittle a stick, and let the braying morons sink themselves.

I feel your pain. Looking at Facebook is getting to be like walking through Walmart...

I hear ya, HD.
In '08 I sold everything in CA & had the same notions. Spent a couple of years in Portland care-taking an elderly couple. The wife was a retired physician and when I spoke of buying something out in the sticks, she would say, "At your age you may want to live near a good medical facility."
I eventually bought here in Scottsdale and in '11 I had a quad by-pass and a few months ago I had congestive heart failure.
Osborne Healthcare (Scottsdale...and one of AZ's finest) worked on me both times...less than a mile away.
What's your age?

Tomorrow's another day. The sun will rise again. Rather than another year there, maybe a change in scenery would be good. After all, there are places with fewer mosquitos... the Northwest, for instance.

I know I have considered it (with a slightly different slant - I'd like to find a remote town in need of a good hardware store and go do that). It does seem like everything is going down-hill fast...

I own a home in Seattle. Its turning into the SF bay area rather quickly.

You should have seen how many cars I saw today taking up more than one space. I hate everyone.

60 years after it was published, you've now recited the precise prediction of Atlas Shrugged.

Say what you want about ayn rand, but it can't be said that her predictions for the course of the US were not spot on.

This is practically dialog straight from atlas shrugged:

I feel like the rewards of being a competent, hard working citizen are growing less and less. I swear, you're almost scorned for having a brain in your head, and not having a readily available sob story about how society OWES you.

Watching "Buying Alaska" this evening. This husband and wife want to move far into the woods, but get upset when the find out they can only get DSL. Because "DSL will be to slow for chatting with friends."

LOL, one person or a hundred people or a million people all pretending to be John Galt doesn't make her dystopian science fiction the truth. For every Galt, there is a person willing to pick up the tools he threw down and make their own try.

One thing I learned a long time ago was that I controlled how happy or unhappy I was. If I choose to be happy, nothing can change that other than a me choosing to be something else.

Something else I learned was not get worked up over things out of my control.

So, HardDrive, learn those two truths and you are likely to be far less inclined to go hide in the woods.......

I take the attitude "Someone else can fight the battles." and have learnt to roll with it. I won't say my sworn enemies are forgiven, but I'm taking a more relaxed stance these days. Sure I'm up for it if anyone does anything really wrong; such as the atrocity of taking up two parks, or driving too slowly in front of me, but I really have chilled out much to the delight of my GF.

We would have already done it if not for the kids. Life's too short to be fighting battles for people who don't give a **** about you. Our plan is to take early retirement and move to the mountains once the kids are out of the house, so 11 more years. Just sell everything and downsize and live cheaply. Work enough to provide ourselves with play money and enjoy life.

Life's too short to give yourself ulcers over crap. I've spent all weekend banging my head against a wall trying to deal with an unreasonable client who has proven to be untrustworthy, and has proven that he has no respect for me or my time. I'm fully ready to fire him and walk away from a good deal of money... Life's too effing short for this man.

"Sell everything and move to to country"

It sounds tempting but long ago I realised most of the stress in our lives is self inflicted.
Live a good life, enjoy and allow yourself some fun. If you're feeling down do something you've never done before.

and again "Sell everything and move to to country". I know a family that did just that. They were so bored they started attending swingers parties IN THE COUNTRY

Cabin in the woods?
Would miss the internet.
Would not miss tab's predictions. What I don't know about I don't care about!
Would miss the wife as she would not stay long.
Would miss the medical facilities. Would carry aspirins for impending heart attack.
Would miss the dentist.
Would miss grid power.

No, cabin in the woods would not be permanent just part time. Camping is a simulation as I miss a decent bed. Sleeping in a tent is not fun.
Cooking over a camp fire or a white gas stove has limited appeal.

I don't think many women could handle the isolation of a cabin in the woods so probably best by yourself.

Which makes me ask the question "how many individuals are out in the sticks by themselves living in a cabin in the woods?"
