Awful bad luck. Hopefully someone rebuilds it.

Really sucks - I'm glad someone saw it and was able to alert him before it got out of hand and in a situation he may not have gotten out of!

I am certainly no aviation expert... but I did see a documentary about how they are starting to build smaller/lighter airplanes for this type of racing... I love the old WWII warbirds but maybe it is time we saved them for air shows and pulled them out of racing?

There have been attempts over the years (Tsunami) but none have ever really caught on. I'd like to see a modern alternative.

I saw Precious Metal last year after Reno at Deer Valley airport (KDVT), on a fuel stop on its way home. Gorgeous plane, it'll be rebuilt.

IIRC, wasn't that the idea behind 'Pond racer' (a Burt Rutan design)?

It used two turbo Nissan V6 motors.

Found it....

I think Thom Richard was understandably over-dramatic with his prediction that PM is out of racing for good. He had just narrowly missed being killed in a possible fuel tank explosion, or a sudden fuel fire on takeoff, so let's wait and see what the owner wants to do with the airplane once they can get a good look at it. Racers are worth a lot more money converted back to stockers (with over-perfect paint and all the WWII accessories and gee-gaws added) so that could be where they decide to go. It was a Whittington creation back in the '80s so if it's going to be put back to stock there may be a lot more work to do.

By the way, he used to be Richard Thom and then he changed it around.

Yeah, just seems weird no one can improve on 1940's tech... I certainly would not want them to start using jets but I would also think with advances in the combustion engine and airframe materials they could come up with something competitive.

Can you imagine them running the Indy 500 in these?

There is no money to be made developing racing aircraft. Aircraft developement and certification is stupendously expensive, without a market for the product no one is going to start building racers. Big difference building a track car purpose built for racing and doing the same with an aircraft.

They have in Sportsman Class.
Nemesis NXT Official Internet Site

Probably one of the big hurdles in Unlimited class is lack of big engines. Who makes V-12 airplane engines these days?
