Do you really care if VW/Others manipulate EPA ratings?

I keep reading how the scandal will affect VW loyalty and such, but I'm not so sure.
Maybe I'm the minority, but I don't really care that VW manipulated the system to get past EPA regulations. VW makes a great car and the diesel engine is a great engine, even if it is a bit more polluting than advertised... The fact that they engineered this trick into their cars is ingenious and makes me want one even more!

I think TDI owners fall into two camps: One wants a fun to drive car that gets fantastic gas mileage. The other wants a "Green" car that is also fun to drive and a Tesla won't cut it for them. Then you've got some owners who are a mixture of both.

I would think the owners who are trying to do the right thing with the environment and feel good about their purchase will feel cheated the most.

When you get right down to it they were deceived.

I think you might care if you owned one and the fix (possibly mandatory?) involved using more fuel ($$) to cover the same distance on your long commute.

I looked at a Jetta TDI a couple of years ago, neat car but I'm glad now I passed.

No, I don't care. I'd rather we concentrate on the biggest emmissions worldwide and quit worrying about the smallest.

I am angry about this. I was sold a brand new car that doesn't do what it was advertised to. They could have had the car run within limits using DEF but they chose not to go there to make a bigger profit. I do care how much emissions I put out. Especially when I bought the car and living in L.A.

IMHO they should take my car back at full price and trade it for a new model with proper equipment. Hell will freeze over before that happens. We got seriously screwed in this deal. I hope the US and the civil suit lawyers throw the book at these *******s.

^ This.

Winterkorn pubished a video message promising they will make this right. I am sure it involves a $200 gift certificate to be used against a new model purchase. Guy doesn't even have the guts to resign.

This. How about we focuse on emissions from developing countries or unregulated countries which are exponentially more significant than a little carbon out of a few TDI Jettas.

IMO, a year's worth of VW's in this country exceeding the bloated EPA's standards would not amount to an hour's worth of pollution from 1 factory in China. This shows how advanced VW is in their knowledge. Great for them.

I love my wife's 2015 Golf Diesel and it's 60mpg on the road. Take that away and it will pollute more. leave it alone.

What exactly does your car not do, that it was advertised to do. It goes from pt. A to pt. B.

You guys are nuts. If there is a rule, you have to meet it. If you think the rules are too strict, it doesn't make it right to break them. If I was an engineer I would take pride getting the emissions down to the required limit. Instead some worm programmed a cheater program to get around this. How can you look at yourself in the mirror if you are part of this "solution"? These people are scum in my book.

If it's ok for VW to deliberately avoid meeting rules that others were following, I'd like to get a list of rules that I could also break to get an advantage over my peers, neighbors, co-workers, taxes ......

Words still out how the "fix" looks like. It is possible I am forced to do the recall in CA to be allowed registration. If there is a software only "fix" it will likely hurt mileage and worse the life of DEF, turbo and EGR plumbing. I now have a car that is less reliable, has less power and higher cost of ownership. This was the first car in my life that I bought new so I would not have to worry about repairs / maintenance etc. Now I find myself looking into aftermarket tuning and modifications. Should not be necessary on my daily appliance car ...

Nope.

They were told to get emissions down to a certain level. They did that.

Just because the cars ran like a dog at those levels and people wouldn't buy them if they did and the company would go out of business means nothing.

while I despise the EPA for all the abuses it facilitates and the evil that is catch shares (google it) I believe VW was very wrong in doing this and I agree with Aigel.

Absolutely wrong.

Slippery slope.

What will they justify next to skirt required standards?

People who abide by unjust laws are as bad as the people who pass them.

As far as I can tell, there is no constitutional authority for the EPA to even exist.

The EPA was/is a good idea whose gotten a little too big for their britches.

In any case, VW is still wrong in this situation. They cheated/lied to their customers while lying/cheating the EPA. They should be/will be punished in the short term by the government, but the consumer market will have the final deciding vote on what happens to VW in the long run.

I think it's great. The way the law is worded means this workaround is not illegal depending on how you interpret it. Basically I hate the epa and I applaud them vw for this.
