The $1,500.00 Sandwich

6 months and $1,500.00 to truly make a sandwich from scratch.

Maybe a little inflated considering the method of acquiring salt but interesting in that there is a lot we take for granted.

True self sufficiency is certainly attainable, people do it every day, but it's a full time job.

Sometimes I think how 'liberating' it would be to go totally from scratch... then you think it through and... well, screw that . Goodbye Porsche time....

Awesome video.

I haven't ground my own wheat, collected sea salt, or made cheese, but I would have killed the chicken prior to baking the bread.

Interesting. I will stick to going to the grocery store and giving them money I earned doing my job.

And on one point of the film: Killing a chicken is not murder. It is killing a chicken. Murder is killing humans.

I guess if he wanted Black olives on it he would have gone to Greece and the cost would be more.

I go to Subway. $5 and ready in 3 minutes.

Yeah, and some people would add up the cost of tools, space, time and materials and conclude that life is better paying Jiffy Lube to change their oil, or letting GM maintain their appliances (cars) under warranty.

P.S. If you believe that what Subway claims to be tomatoes are actual tomatoes, or that the meat they put on your sandwich compares to meat you raise, well... But I've never made my own mustard, and that is an important part of any real sandwich.

My grown daughter gifted me a book that was about a guy whom decided to make his own toaster from scratch. He traveled and went to the mining source for copper, used mica as an insulator, made his own plastic using a recipe to make it from scratch, etc. Took him several months and I believe several $k dollars - all to reproduce a toaster that can be bought for $20.

That was cool!
I've done a lot of that.
I grew up on a farm and what we ate all winter was pretty much what we grew during the summer. Green beans and canned tomatoes got tiresome in a hurry. But I still can tons of pickles and salsa & make cheese and sausage every year.
It's more fun when you know if you screw it up you can just go to the supermarket and buy what you want.

I'm busy; grocery store is convenient, and relatively cheap. Done deal.

A touch traumatic but good grounding. Blood spraying everywhere in long spurts. OMG, it's dead but still moving.

Eaters gonna eat.
