Playboy Magazine making a format change!

wow.

going PG-13!! apparently the first issue to come out, fully covered will be in March. this will be interesting. the magazine will be more like Esquire or something..
whatever.. the old playboy. only place i ever see it anymore is at the barber shop, and all my hair left me. :)

i cant think of the last time i ever looked into the pages of a Playboy. maybe, just maybe those "articles" will be the prime focus. :)

Nostril Cheese 10-13-2015 11:51 AM

Does anyone actually still read Playboy?

I only read the Braille versions. The fold-out is spectacular!

The over-feminization of America continues.

Did anyone actually ever "read" Playboy? :D

....yeah, yeah, I seem to remember that it "did" have articles ;)

fastfredracing 10-13-2015 12:55 PM

I remember being about 10 years old, and pouring through my dads piles of hot rod magazines, when I found some literature I had never seen before. My life was forever changed

Deschodt 10-13-2015 01:02 PM

800000 people are still subscribed per radio this morning... Apparently they gave up, as porn is available for free everywhere now and they cannot compete... Still, I don't think anyone who's into Esquire-type mags will be buying this because most people will *still* think you are reading a porn-mag, and you aren't... Won't work marketing wise...

kach22i 10-13-2015 01:57 PM

They have always branded themselves as a "Life-Style" magazine, let's see if they really are.

scottmandue 10-13-2015 02:10 PM

I only get it for the articles!

But seriously... with the proliferation of porn, porn, and extra strength porn with a side of porn it is probably a smart move for playboy... they can't compete with the internet.

Back when I was a teen and snuck into my older brothers room to look at playboy... the girls were mostly wearing sexy see though nighties. Some of the sexiest stuff was... the cartons!

pavulon 10-13-2015 02:24 PM

The Cubs in the playoffs, UT beats OU, ISIS... now this.

I had the exact same thought. If you read it in public, the average person will still peg you as a pervert. I think they should have tried to find a different niche, maybe a focus on quality vs the quantity that you'll find on the Internet.

tabs 10-14-2015 01:23 AM

I have always found Playboy to be intellectually stimulating...

I do...every month cover to cover. It is not pornographic. I will miss the ladies but hope the other content will remain relevant.

javadog 10-14-2015 04:42 AM

I think they are doomed. The younger generation seems to have no interest in reading.

They'll also never escape their past, so I wouldn't expect to see one sitting out in a medical waiting room, hair salon, etc.

I suppose the saving grace is that Hugh is now a couple hundred years old and won't need the income much longer.

I would argue that it's not a younger generation that no longer reads, the reading is simply in an online format. Though it's not just the younger generation, when I travel I see far more people of all ages on Kindles and iPads than I do reading magazines while killing time at the airport. Playboy online really has nothing distinct to offer, there are many websites that offer good reading for free, along with all of the naked women you could ever wish for. Evolve or die, and I think their evolution is doomed to fail.

I was a little bit older when a friend of mine showed my a ragged copy of a Playboy he found in the field behind his house.

This was 1967/68 and after a quick scan the air seemed to smell a little cleaner, colors were a lot brighter, the future seemed clear.

And this was pre-topiary Playboy :D

Older people, and any people that read, may use new forms of delivering the printed word to their brains. That can be a matter of cost, or convenience.

What I am talking about are people that simply choose not to read literature of any kind. No book, no magazines, no newspapers, etc. They prefer to get their news and entertainment in a video format. Any reading is limited to texting and internet chat. My kids, their friends... People in their 20's, 30's... These are people that are successful in what they do, they just don't chose to read. The TV and cell phone are their new gods.

So is the February (last nude) issue going to be a collector's item?

widgeon13 10-14-2015 06:06 AM

They are all collector items if you are an 11 year old male!

URY914 10-14-2015 09:42 AM

I never understood why guys collected the old back issues. Boxes of old mags that never get looked at and take up room. Seems like a waste. I guess it does capture a point in time for you and the pop culture but they are not like the the family photos you can put on the shelf and share with others.

Did every guy in college or high school really have a foldout hanging on the back of their door? Or was that just in the movies?

winders 10-14-2015 09:53 AM

Times are changing! Playboy Magazine is an anachronism today.

Does Farrah Fawcett in a one piece count?

You mean the brown low-cut swimsuit? Yes - it counts.

Nah, but when I was in college I was a photographer for the school paper and I parlayed that into a few interesting photoshoots of models, including one of Candy Loving...

I also was an artist and painted a few Playboy centerfolds in oil, and that did get the attention of everybody that lived in the dorm.

Good times, now that I think of them...

pcardude 10-14-2015 01:10 PM

Why don't they just shut down completely? They cannot escape their past and their readers are dying off in a hurry!

I'd say 50/50 in my freshman dorm....but not I ;)

I'm ashamed to admit it now, but some of you other old farts will understand my choice of poster "way back when":

Linda Ronstadt .... (and yes, she was SEXY once upon a time)

javadog 10-14-2015 02:14 PM

Never had a Linda Ronstadt poster but she was quite the babe and had an incredible voice. Saw her many, many times...

Then she started singing standards, got fat, killed the dream...

Hugh is going to die, the blondes are going to leave the mansion and that's going to be the end. Playboy truly has jumped the shark. Have you looked at one recently? The image processing corrections are so extreme, they may as well have it all computer generated from scratch and save the modeling fees.

BeyGon 10-14-2015 02:39 PM

Like the rest of you, I only bought it for the articles. The first time I read The Fly was in Playboy.

The content has fallen far below the standards of years past.

I received it as a gift five years ago and have kept up a subscription half for the laughs and half for the articles. Can't recall the last time I folded out that bit in the middle - sure the image is alluring but the rest of the centerfold bit seems "old and lame" even to this old and lame 41yo.

As alluded to in the news - I'm not waiting for a once-a-month delivery in the mail for tits if I want to see them.

Esquire, having once signed Hugh's paychecks, has held up far better with politics, literature and culture in general (if you're a metro-hipster-liberal-sexual). The 1000'th issue is quite a good read...

ckelly78z 10-15-2015 05:08 PM

I haven't picked up a Playboy mag since I found one in my Dad's closet 35 years ago.

Crowbob 10-15-2015 05:37 PM

I looked at the same centerfold every month. Just like being married, except a lot cheaper.

UncleRay 10-15-2015 07:24 PM

I was a subscriber back in the early 80's for a few years and kept the old ones in a box. Let the subscription run out when I got married. Later one of the boys found that box and the wife found one under his mattress when cleaning. Called for me and said look what I found.......I saw the cover picture (IIRC Terry Welles) and without thinking said "oh that's June 1981". She looked at the date and then gave me "the look" which meant get rid of them.
Call me old fashioned but the earlier years photos left something to the imagination. And of course I subscribed for the pictures and even read the articles. Loved the cartoons. Haven't see or read one in many years.
It will be interesting to see what the new format becomes.

BeyGon 10-15-2015 08:30 PM

If you find one with an article about wheels, bicycles, I once owned THE Schwinn Aero Cycle that was in it. Hot naked blond straddling the tank right up to the handlebars. I didn't own it when the magazine came out, just a little later. Not one like it, that one.

35 years...must read SLOW....the articles weren't that long :D

URY914 10-16-2015 02:56 AM

Candy Loving.;)

javadog 10-16-2015 05:03 AM

Yeah... she was actually a lot better looking in person. Very petite. Less hair.

The guy that shot her centerfold pics was pretty famous but I think he missed the boat on that shoot.
