What up with Porsche Prices?

Wife and I have been thinking about getting a date car. I've always been partial to Porsche but the pricing is outrageous. I can buy a Ferrari or even a Lamborghini Gallardo for the price of a used 911 turbo. Why is a five year old 911 as expensive or sometimes more expensive than a used supercar?

I'll sell you my 32,000 mile 2008 Porsche 997 Turbo cabriolet for MUCH less than a Gallardo or even a 2001 360 Ferrari. Its a perfect date car. PM me if you're really looking.

A super car is not a date car. There are lots of fun cars out there that are fun to drive and fun to own and won't cripple your budget with maintenance and upkeep.

BTW, crippling maintenance and upkeep costs are why some exotic used cars are such a great deal. Don't ask me how I would know that.

Definitely something to consider. And although I do realize maintenance is more expensive on Lambos and Ferrari, I've been spending some time on Ferrari chat. What many are saying is that the high maintenance costs are in large part due to the cars sitting for long periods - hence all the low mileage cars. I would drive the hell out of it if I bought one same as I did with my 930 Turbo Cab. LOL.

Here's one for you. 1988 turbo Slant nose listed at $288,000. Are they out of there effing minds? I sold mine several years ago for not even a fraction of that. my wife would shoot me if she saw this.

So it's been a while since I looked at cars and it is evident that I'm definitely out of touch. The air-cooled cars have gotten freaking crazy expensive. I guess my thing is that if I'm going to shell out that kind of money, I'll take a Ferrari or Lambo over a Porsche.

Weird market. You get a big ding on resale for having any miles on the car. But, when they sit they seem to crumble or at least needs maintenance. Basically you cant win, just need to bring your wallet.

Turbo cabs pricing are all over the place. I ahve one, but not for sale. I want to be able to put my finger on a price so I can up my insurance. It seems that I keep having to up that every 6 months.

Not sure the OP has a fair "complaint" if he's just looking for a fun "date car" in a 911. Have you seen the affordable 996 thread? Heck, even 997s can be purchased by mere mortals these days. Have you seen how much 996 turbo you can buy for about $40k these days? Yeah, 930s, 965s, and 993tts are pricey; but that's like complaining about how impossible it is to buy a beachfront house in Malibu or Nantuckett. I may have missed the boat on that GT3 I always wanted, but that doesn't mean there aren't fun Porsches to be had for a lower budget.

Didn't mean to complain. I'm just really surprised at how much older Porches have appreciated. They weren't that pricey when I was paying attention to them several years ago (I don't follow the car market as you can tell) and I don't understand why they are so valuable now. I don't consider them classics. Ferrari's are even more rare and as I showed in my post above you can get similar year Ferrari for similar pricing - and I'm sure they are also fun to drive.

I don't care for the style of the 996. I could get into a 997 but, as I showed in a post above, for similar money you can get a Ferrari and even a Lamborghini. The last two are a completely different level of sports car ownership and I think it would be a fun novelty to play with for a few years. My point is that for the same money you can get much more car. The asking price of the older Porsche's aren't worth it for me. Anyhow, I've got time to think about it as I'm still finalizing plans for my garage addition. Wife and I finally agreed on a design. LOL

You said 5 year old in your initial post, which would be 2010. Yes a 993TT is more, they have been for years due to collectors. Same reason why a Testarossa is more than a 360. On the upside, the 2010 997TT is a cheaper and better driving car.

Cabriolet, gay colors, ugly wheels that are way too small in rear, dated styling, etc... If it's an automatic, it's gayer than a Miata. JMHO, of course.
