The Martian (book)
Anyone read it? The DJ's I listen to have been telling me to read this for a year. Now I jumped on it, since it is coming out in movie form. It had me at the first sentence. What a good book!!! I'm a few chapters in, so please watch those spoilers.
A page turner. I like the engineering geeky stuff. Sent via Jedi mind trick.

Loved it, funny, technical, but very readable. Couldn't put it down.

Best book I read in the past 2 years. I've been telling all the friends that would listen ;-) Can't wait for the movie - won't do it justice but should be good entertainment anyway (good actors/director).

Thanks! I've been looking for a good book to read next. Just finishing a biography of Nikola Tesla. Tesla was a far under-appreciated genius!

Any book that starts with the three words: "I'm totally ficked", can't be all that bad. Honestly, one of the best reads in a long time. And the only book that author has written.

I enjoyed it. I got it initially because I couldn't resist the curiosity of how and what he did to survive. I don't know how true it was from an engineering perspective, but it was a good story never the less. I'll see the movie.

The author tried unsuccessfully to get the book published, to no avail. So he self-published. It was a very big seller on Amazon at $0.99 per, and so was picked up by a big publisher.
I think agents turned it down because it is highly technical and intelligent. Understandable, considering the mental midgets one sees on the news and other forms of media on a daily basis. However, it seems there is a sizable population of people in this country who not only appreciate an intelligent story, they crave it.

Yep, read it a couple of years ago. Great book. Having worked in manned space flight for a decade or so, I thought he really nailed it...

1/3 of the way in, great read. Had to be wait listed at the Library as there was only one copy and now a waiting list behind ME! No renewals but I have three weeks to get it back. Should have it finished tomorrow or tonight if I do a marathon sit down.

I read it this Summer and enjoyed it. The best sections were when the protagonist would need to problem-solve his way through a seemingly-impossible quandary; the science employed in each scenario seems plausible to a layman such as myself.

Don't watch the trailer for the movie, it killed one of the surprises in the book. Matt Damon plays Watney the Engineer, at least it wasn't the midget Tom Cruise. Finished it last night. The author is a techweenie so he knew what he was writing about.

Cool. Will go look for it today.
Need a good read. Currently reading the Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat. Strangely, I picked it out of our bookcase the day before Oliver Sacks passed away.
