Ft. Hood up next for my son - any recommendations?
My son graduated with the 07-15 Ranger School Class! He's got a bit of time and one more school to finish at Ft. Benning and then is headed to Ft. Hood in September. Anyone with local knowledge that can recommend a decent neighborhood for a new 2nd Lieutenant and his soon to be wife? They'll get married in 2016 and she is currently finishing up nursing school through the same ROTC program he graduated from. Right now the rent is on him, in 6 months they should have two 2nd lieutenant salaries to work with.

Good for him, and good for her! Sounds like they are pretty ambitious! I've got nothing but my congratulations to provide.

Tell them to try and get on post housing, don't buy, and try and get out of Ft. Hood as soon as possible.

I would look south of Stan Schlueter Loop near W S Young, around the golf course on S Roy Reynolds, Copperas Cove, or out east on FM 439 if they want a slice of country and be near Lake Belton. It depends on what they want, but near the base in the city is not pretty.

When he first gets there they will put him up in the BOQ (Basic Officer Quarters). If it was my kid I would tell him to live there for a month or so while he learns the post, gets to know some people, check things out and then make an informed decision as to where to live. As others have said, it is a huge post with lots of off base communities.

I thought I'd update this. I sent him this thread to look at. He's in a furnished apt. now and they are looking to buy. Sounds like in the Copperas Cove area. I can't talk him out of that and understand his reasons. Rents sound quite high and his mortgage will be very doable. His Mom and I made good money over the years with single family rentals and he is prepared to hold on to it for a long time if necessary. His fiance recently got word she'll be active duty as well. They are both great kids, all of us parents, his and hers are very lucky! Thanks for your replies and advice!

Houses in the Fort Hood area are actually pretty darn cheap (or at least they were when I had friends there 5+ years ago). Selling shouldn't be that big of a deal when they move on, if they decide not to rent it out. There's always people moving in there. As mentioned, Fort Hood is HUGE. It's the largest military installation in the world, if memory serves me correctly.
Housing allowance (not even mentioning salaries) for 2 2nd Lieutenants--who will rapidly make 1LT and Captain shortly thereafter--is nothing to sneeze at. They can get quite a bit of house without even dipping into their "normal" paycheck.
