Rifle cleaning. any new info?

i am gonna get back into shooting.

mostly my 257 weatherby magnum. i'm getting tired of targets just staying outsid.

nevermind. target shooting. i just picked up several boxes of ammo. got to thinking. my rifle cleaning stuff is in TX. and i'm pretty sure my brother has laid claim to everything anyways.

any new updates to stuff? i just used to have a cool one-piece rod, some rag pushy things, a brass brush, and hopps #9 and some lube. simple

now i see "snakes" sprays, foams,..the landscape of a clean gun has changed and left me behind. what are you using?

I don't use anything else. Get the adapter for shot guns and rifles. I have never been happier with a product.

I also use frog lube but the cognoscenti do not approve. You might.

I personally like to "soak" my barrel with some foam for about 30 minutes before cleaning. It really loosens up the crap. Then I use a brass jag sized to the caliber with a cleaning patch. I like the Birchwood Casey stuff. I use a Remington barrel squeegee between patches and brushings. It takes me about 5 minutes of actual effort to clean a barrel.

I toss the action into an ultrasonic cleaner. I tend not to worry about this kind of stuff too much for bolt-actions.

Don't over think the basic gun cleaning maintenance. The standard brass brush and cotton patches have kept millions of guns clean and functioning for a long......long time. Hoppes # 9 has been around forever and still works just fine. A decent over the counter oil and you're good to go. Actually taking the time to clean/lube your firearm/s is more important than what you are using in my opinion. Shoot safe .

+1 on Hoppes Boresnake. Gun oil plus the snake is all my rifles get, unless they see very heavy use. I actually think you can over-clean a barrel. I think of the barrel as something that does well somewhat "seasoned", like your cast iron pan.

Given the cost of 257 W ammo, you could probably go out and buy a used .30-06 with a scope, and recoup the cost after a year of shooting. Those fancy pants calibers are $.

Me too!…And I still use it. My grandfather was taking me shooting by the time I was 5. We always cleaned the guns with Hoppes #9 as soon as we got home. He'd say "If you don't have time to clean the guns when you get home, you didn't have time to shoot". …A creedo I live to to this day.
