You forgot my favorite one: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY!
I'm not really big on westerns, but I do like UNFORGIVEN and HIGH NOON.

I'm not really into Westerns either, but there's a good one with Paul Newman and Robert Redford I think, but I can't remember the name of the movie.
My favourite movie of all-time (not a western) is One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest... Last edited by Ian Morton; 11-24-2002 at 10:02 AM.. |

Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance Kid........Ian...It's ok but no cigar
Good Bad and the Ugly........It was a toss up between the Good, Bad... and Once upon a time....... Both are deserving, and I couldn't say which one is better? Eli Wallach as Tuco stole the show..... The opening scene wt Woody Strode, Jack Elam and LQ Jones in Once was fantastic. 3 major character actors get bumped off right in the begining. |

Tuco
I love the 2 scenes where Tuco is about to be hanged and they are reading off the list of crimes he has committed. They don't repeat a single crime in either scene it's just one looong list. Then he snears at an old lady.

UmmmmHmmm Good
Jermiah was a good movie. High Plains Drifter the first time I saw it didn't impress me or for that matter the first 5 or so times I saw it. then Bingo I started to like the movie. Pale Rider was just a remake of Shane only with Clint. The Unforgiven was just a continuation of Josey Wales (an outlaw) as he got older. But there was more to the Unforgiven than just that. Also U might say Unforgiven is Clint at the peak of his powers as a story teller. As Fist was the first of Sergio Leones Westerns and Once Upon a Time was his last.....he kinda grew in his abilities. The Kentuckian huh that throws me, I saw it but can't remember it. But I did include Gunfight at OK Corral....... with Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas.
If U like Burt lancaster than watch the Scalphunters.......Telly Salvas, Shelly Winters and Ossie Davis. Oh l thought about adding this in the top 10.... The Proffessionals with Burt and Lee Marvin great movie. Also Garden of Evil with Gary Cooper, Richard Widmark and Susan Hayward great movie PS I think Butch and Sun Dance was too slick, a little to commerical it had all the hooks but little real substance. Tabs, Thanks for the suggestions. Being only 24, it's kinda hard to find info or access to good old westerns. On another note, it's always been a fantasy of mine to go off into the mountains like Jeremiah Johnson. I'd like to see if I could do it. |

Another BL Movie
Valdez is Coming......About a hispanic sheriff that kidnaps a Big Ranchers wife so he can collect a small amount of money for an Indian woman. There is a scene where Burt is picking these guys off at 1200 yards with a Sharps Rifle.... Done in the early 1970's.

More westerns
There were a couple of others with Gregory Peck.......Stalking Moon........which was about a really "BAD" Apache warrior going after Peck.
MCkenna Gold...which was a good premise but didn't work out too well...which was shot in De Chennley Canyon in AZ. Had an allstar cast including Edgar G Robinson and Anthony Quale. Some movies by Sam Peckinpah that were great were.....Major Dundee wt Chuck Heston, Pat Garret and Billy the Kid....James Colburn as Garret and Kris Kristofferson as Billy, Bob Dylan had a small role in the film. Peckinpah also did the Getaway with steve McQueen...the later Alec Baldwin version sucked. But one of my absolute favorites is Ballad of Cable Hogue (by Peckinpah) with Jason Robards, Stella Stevens with LQ Jones and Strother Martin as supporting characters. Really a low key western. All the above were done from 1965 to 1975 or so, they had a different flavor than the earlier westerns. |
