I always order the "toddle house" and devour it with sick orgy-like cholesterol laden decadence. Something in that omelette is very unhealthy, and good. I find the regulars interesting. My wife and I go there occasionally when we are lazy and hungry. We hadn't been in some time, and walked in to be greeted by the same customers that were there 9 months prior. My wife also comments on how some managers really crack the whip and has everyone on task, and how when they aren't there (or out in the parking lot on a cigarette break) things get lax. I also stare at the picture of "Bert" serving "Bert's chili" on the wall. I am fascinated by it, but I am not going to order it. |
Nothing better than a WH on a Saturday morning. Good food and you are on your way!

THe WHs around here have empty parking lots too...while the local greasy spoons are packed.....support your local greasers!!! |
I'll sometimes venture out to The Halfway House Cafe on Sierra Hwy between Santa Clarita and Acton. Just a regular old greasy spoon cafe, I like the eggs over easy and corned beef hash.
Sometimes it's closed for filming (lots of commercials shoot here) but that's usually during the week. Halfway House Cafe - 53 Photos - American (Traditional) - Santa Clarita, CA - Reviews - Yelp http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1445888591.jpg |

We don't have waffle houses around here.
We have IHOPs, but no one goes there. Too crowded. And their roofs are all messed up. But we do have "the original pancake house" in Anaheim on Lincoln ave. It's open 6 to 2 and there is ALWAYS a line if they are open. I haven't been there in years because I don't like waiting in line for an hour, but it's almost worth it. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1445895666.jpg I could say how incredibly good their food is, but here's a yelp page where others do it: http://www.yelp.com/biz/original-pancake-house-anaheim |
I'd be happy to get a WH breakfast a couple times/week. Nearest one is two hours away. Always sit at the counter if possible, in front of the grill.

It is interesting how they came about, but I can't recall the whole story. My grandfather and Joe Rodgers Sr. were both regional managers for the Toddle House. Joe partnered up and opened the first Waffle House in Georgia, and my grandfather opened the Pitt Grill in Lake Charles, La. Both were very successful because they carried over the best aspects of the Toddle House. Counter top service over looking the grill being the main aspect.
Back in 1982, after growing to 181 locations, my uncle sold off the Pitt Grill, and of course the Waffle House is still going strong. I'll eat there. |
I love going out for breakfast!
For such a simple meal it takes a LOT of logistics to put together a good breakfast. Just getting everything on the table and coordinating so everything is warm/hot at the same time (eggs, bacon, toast, potatoes, coffee) Cooking a good hash brown is a science. Pancakes and waffles require some sort of black magic to get them to come out right. |
WH headquarters is in N metro Atlanta. I know the CEO, last year his son was President/my son Vice-President of a fraternity at Ga Tech.

Grits!

So I don't normally eat breakfast, but where did I find myself this morning?
Sitting at the WH counter having a waffle and hash browns...damn you guys :D Probably been a dozen years since I've been in one or had a waffle....I SHALL RETURN!!! |

We have had banana splits that were 3 scoops of ice cream and a banana. Nothing else. Once my wife asked for water and the waitress reach to the table behind her and grabbed the water glass that was there and gave it to my wife. Once or twice they actually did get the complete food order correct. We will catch a WH when we are on vacation if there is one close by. Love waffles. |
