some observations from breakfast this morning
For whatever reason I enjoy going to Waffle House for breakfast. My wife is currently in N.Y. tending to her mom after having back surgery so this morning I went to WH for breakfast. Typical of any greasy spoon on a Sunday morning the place was very busy. I counted ten people working basically split 50/50 cooks vs. wait staff. I sat at the kitchenette so had a perfect view of the food being cooked. The sights and sounds of this type of restaurant are interesting. Waitresses barking out orders loudly over the sounds of plates and utencils clanking together. They had everything going on- eggs, omelletes, hash browns, waffles, pancakes, grits, bacon, sausage, steaks etc. it was all just flowing like clock work even though to the observer it is organized chaos at best. My waitress was fast/efficient and my omellete was perfect nice and fluffy, the hash browns nicely browned without being too crisp. Hard to screw up my raisin toast but it wasn't burnt. Grand total of $6.51 and no charge for the entertainment. I know it's quirky but I enjoyed the show.

Some good memories from when I worked in a restaurant just shy of UC Berkeley during the Vietnam protests. So many characters! Never a dull moment.

Sometimes its about the little things. Its pretty rare to be able to find enjoyment in otherwise ordinary events. Unless you had a few bong hits first.

And maybe that's why the food was so good?

Waffle House was very much a High School, late night affair for me after we moved to South Carolina.
I had not been to one in years until last weekend, our son's final Parents Day at VMI. We got there early enough so the wait wasn't bad...the line was out the door when we left. Covered and smothered.

As a yankee my first visit to a Waffle House was met with a wee bit of trepidation on my part but went very much as the OP described it. However I cannot eat Crispy Creme.

Waffle House is a guilty pleasure and one of the things I like about the south. I miss them occasionally. There isn't anything like it anywhere in this part of the country - the nearest one I've seen was in PA. The only thing close in New England is *****ty local dives that I don't dare touch or Dunkin Donuts which is totally worthless IMHO. Then again I'm probably better off without any of that stuff in my life at all but on rare occasion I do miss having a WH to go to the same way I miss having In-N-Out French fries (also not available here) or a Togos sub (ditto). Oh well.

I haven't been to a WH in years. I think the last time was at least 15 years ago. Before that was probably about 20-21 years ago. WH just doesn't do it for me. I do like the Country Omelet at IHOP though. Ham, onions, hash browns and cheese in an omelet, what's not to love. I probably don't go to an IHOP any more than once every 5 years though.

I've been to my share of WH and it is really interesting to me how VASTLY different the quality can be from one to the next. You'd think that it's simple stuff and hard to mess up, but that's when you'd be wrong.
I've been to quite a few questionable WHs (if that's not redundant) that have much smaller menus than others, for whatever reason. It is worth what they charge for it, I suppose.

Waitress: "Do you want anything in your hash browns?"
Me: "No bugs." That always seems to get a smile. If you haven't figured it out yet, the reason the cooks can get all of those orders the waitstaff are barking out is because of a coding system. Cook hears the order and then grabs the correct plate for the order, then watch carefully where they place a pickle or an onion, piece of cheese, packet of jelly, packet of mayo on the plate. 10 minutes later and 10 orders down the line they can look at the plate and get the order correct. Me, I'll drive out of my way for a Dennys. ![]() |

With the title of your thread I thought you were going to show a picture of your breakfast as a "deposit" in your toilet.

I love breakfast food. Friday evening i had a pretty heavy leg and shoulder work out. Right after i left the gym i was feeling very dizzy and light headed. I noticed that i left my whey protein at work so cursed at myself. Within an eye sight i saw an ihop and awarded myself with an omelette and pancakes. I left the place feeling like a champ. Funny thing is half an hour later i was hungry again

Wow, doesn't sound enjoyable to me! This is why I eat BF at home. It is a calm and relaxed activity with the family. Everyone is happy to eat a full egg / bread / cold cuts breakfast, after a week of oatmeal every morning!
