Let's See Your First Aid Kit for Home Use...
I want to improve my First Aid Kit. Currently, mine's just a tray with "band aids and tape".
I was browsing and found this thread... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/off-topic-discussions/249422-food-supplies-plague.html Moses posted some good info on what to have in a kit, but how is it stored? I'd also like to take a First Aid course with my 16 yr old son. Has anyone taken any type of course? Just general First Aid stuff. Obviously I'd call 9-1-1 if needed, but I want to be able to treat small stuff and be more prepared to stabilize the bigger stuff. My son has signed up for Rugby and he loves it. Last Saturday we were at a free training event at Az State and one of his teammates broke their pinky. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1446047119.jpg I was the only parent there from his team. The event had a nurse, but she quickly deteremned it was too severe to reposition on site. Turns out she was right. The finger was essentially crumbled and required pins. Oh, he also broke his left wrist at the same time. Ouch. |
My wife is a nurse practitioner (spent years in the ICU and ED/trauma room beforehand as a nurse). Needless to say we're "well stocked"
A couple of years ago we we're watching our daughter play soccer as she collided with another player. From way over on the other side on the field we heard a loud "snap". My wife, without hesitation, says: "that's a collar bone". Sure enough, our daughter broke her collar bone. |

I have several of these for the cars.. house box's has even more.. like Kurt's Lady... lot's of ER & Air Evac time... I'd look for an Basic EMT course over First Aid.. Rika |
Thats a nice kit Rika, but without some serious training its wasted effort!
With a nurse in the house, you'd think we'd have a serious first aid kit, but we really need to step it up! Our plan is to stabilize and get to the ER less than 2 minutes away! ;) Don, for basic stuff, the Red Cross first aid and CPR courses are pretty good. You'll spend about a day doing both and will have a good grasp on the basics in the event you should need them. It will mostly focus on stabilize and call 911, which is fine here in town. If you are planning on spending lots of times out in BFE, then a more advanced course is in order. And CPR training should be mandatory for everyone these days. We just did it with our 10 yr old cub scouts. Get them started young so they know what to do! |
I like to keep this style around, you know, in case of emergency ...

Some grubby bandaids and expired oxycodone.
|
Scottd...search for level 1 Trauma kit / First Aid..
IIRC cheaper than dirt has them from 10 to 350... |
I've got a field dressing and one of those splints that you can shape to fit your needs. Aside from that, I've got nothing.

I reckon a box of band aids and a tube of Neosporin doesn't exactly qualify as a real kit so I'm VERY careful SmileWavy

1/2 of my amazon prime purchases derive from surfing this forum !!! (ordered a kit per family car + one for home)
|
My situation: 3 daughters. Not much into sports and outdoors other than biking.
At home: Different sized band aids Neosporin Alcohol wipes Gauze Tape Ear Thermometer Motrin Pedialyte My car has a more complete kit. I would recommend the CPR class more than the first aid class if you had to choose. I took mine at the local Red Cross. Had to renew CPR every year, but luckily the office offers classes (adult CPR only though). |
He'll be figuring out who his real friends are when he has both hands in splints and/or casts.

One thing, make sure you get some airway stuff, like a BVM, Bag Valve Mask and learn how to use it, and some airway adjuncts, OPA,NPA. Learn your ABCs, airway breathing circulation. The kit Rika posted above on the far right looks like it has a good selection.
Bandaging/splinting/abdominal pads are good stuff, but airway is where it's at when confronted with a real life threating situation. |
My kit that goes everywhere has
NPAs Chest seals Compression bandages Gauze and tape Quickclot Iodine and alcohol swavs Roll splint Tourniquet Shears 14g decomp needle And probably some other crap I'm forgetting |
Wife used to be a community nurse, so she always had to have supplies on hand. Over the years, we've accumulated a massive stockpile. And not just basic stuff. Stuff like syringes, needles, IVs, etc.
We have 2 (maybe 3) 50 gallon Rubbermaid storage bins filled with supplies. http://s7d5.scene7.com/is/image/Cana...id=250&hei=250 |

make sure you get the Col. Steve Yesich version... Rika |
That book is available online as a PDF, very good stuff, excellent as a reference manual.

Thanks for the replies.
Here's a couple sites I found for local First Aid/CPR Training. American Red Cross HeartSavers | Quality CPR and First Aid Training | MESA, AZ Has anyone heard of HeartSavers? Red Cross class is $110, HeartSavers is $50. Both are one day classes covering similar material. Also, lets see your actual kits, please. How do you store your supplies if you do not have the store-bought version? |
