iPhone activated front door lock

Anyone have experience with these? I want a wireless front door lock that I can lock/unlock with my phone and program to lock/unlock automatically.

August is the main player.

Buy a Tesla?

Thanks. I thought there would be a lot more, and a lot more advanced products on the market. August is indeed the one. And they have good customer service. I emailed through their website if the app would allow me to lock and unlock the door automatically based on time I set. Got the standard, "we are closed but here are our buisness hours and will respond..." Way past their business hours, Victor in support emailed back saying they don't have that functionality in the app, he forwarded the request to the development team for consideration...

Going to Best Buy and getting one tomorrow.

No but they are as common as Camry's around here. Does a Tesla have this feature in some way? Can it communicate with Nest, etc.? it if doesn't, I am sure someone is working on that.

Been waiting like 8 months on my Lockitron since it was a kick starter project.

Gogar 10-31-2015 08:24 AM

I bet there's a way to geo-fence it or if not, someone will have one soon.

Like when I drive up to the house and my phone connects to my wifi, my Hue lights turn on.

mikester 10-31-2015 08:33 AM

I've been doing some home automation recently. I bought the Schlage as it can connect to my home automation controller via z-wave. It has a front panel combination capability as well. I can connect to my home controller via an app on my phone as well.

Probably not as high tech as you are looking for but we bought one of those button combo electronic locks and we are pretty happy with it:

http://www.amazon.com/Schlage-BE365VCAM619-Camelot-Keypad-Deadbolt/dp/B000NJJ1MQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1446314220&sr=8-1&keywords=electronic+deadbolt

I was looking at the android powered lock (the above lock cost less so we went with it)... there is some paranoia floating around about hacking into you lock not sure if that is justified or not.

YMMV

I think a crow-bar is more likely than a hacker and faster too but the concerns are justified. That's why I didn't do a blue-tooth lock but Z-Wave is wireless as well. Security isn't an afterthought with it but it isn't as secure as I would like.

Interesting topic, as our new house has a detached garage and I'm thinking of ways we can walk up to the door and have it unlock when coming or going.

osidak 10-31-2015 11:37 AM

I really wanted the august lock until I saw how big the portion of the lock is on the inside - HUGE

LeeH 11-04-2015 03:36 PM

Shaun - did you see this one? Just tripped across it and remembered this thread.

Refurbished units are currently on sale at Best Buy:

Hey Lee, I did, thanks. I don't recall exactly now, but I don't think the Kevo did everything the August does that I need it to do. Also on Amazone, Kevo has the same % of 5 star as 1 star but the August is over 2:1. I also get the sense that August being a new player in the market is doing everything it can to make it's lock and app better.

Because the August is so big, I have to take my door in to get a new, wider stile. Doing that tomorrow. With any luck I'll have the August installed this weekend.

The driver for me is to be able lock and unlock the door 80 feet and one level up away with my phone.

osidak 11-04-2015 05:19 PM

I like the kevo but apparently the actual lock is not very secure and is easy to bump open

A930Rocket 11-04-2015 06:12 PM

I'm not familiar with the Kevo, but the kwikset knobs we use at work are bottom of the barrel.

I prefer Schlage for basic housing. Of course the sky's the limit when buying door hardware.

I initially misread your post and was going to as you where you got that setup. That is a really cool idea, is there one that does that?

gacook 11-05-2015 09:11 AM

Just remember, any automation you do to your house CAN be hacked. Doesn't necessarily mean it will be, but it can be.

Which is why I would never want cameras in my house.

Shaun @ Tru6 11-05-2015 04:16 PM

I can add "commercial door glass installation" to my resume. Got a my door rebuilt today with a wider stile and the glass cut down to size. The guy who did the door work had built my door some 20 years ago. That was pretty cool, he was psyched and ended up rebuilding the entire thing for the same $150 just to replace one stile.

So now all I need is a new deadbolt and probably a hole saw or two. I can go with a Medeco or a Schlage. Not exactly sure why one is 4X the price of the other.

Anyway, here's what you get + the wifi connector.

Any recommendations on a good deadbolt?

That can put a whole new wrinkle in that Oh S%^T I left my phone in the house problem.

Actually had a neighbor with that exact problem knock on my door needing to use my Iphone to load the app just to get into his house after he forgot his phone. . . .
