Why are bikers so dumb?

I just had a group pass me last night on the shoulder and two feet from my driver side door.

I was doing 60 on a 3 lane road with the other two lanes open!

Holy crap. Are these guys special or what?

So, you were in the left lane of a three lane road when the center and right lanes were empty. Whatever happened to staying to the right except to pass?

There are idiots everywhere. Lots of them in cars too.

If he was driving in the passing lane with two open lanes to his right, there's your proof. Idiots attract idiots.

Heery, How in the heck did you interpret that from the original post? It seems to me the OP was in the right lane and the bikers passed on the right shoulder and the two left lanes were open.

This kind of crazy stuff with bikers happens all the time on the local freeways. Surprised more are not killed....

I'm on the very right lanes and they used the shoulder to pass me and the guy behind me.

The two left lanes are open...and yes, I was speeding, so I wasn't going slow either.

I've had a couple of bikes pass me on the right - when I'm on my bike. Morons. I've also had bikes go under the speed limit on twisty roads and not let me pass - when I'm on my bike.

That said, i've lost track of the number of car drivers who almost hit me because they were looking at their phone - when I'm on my bike.

I was a biker for years until a car put me into a wheelchair for a year. (Not my fault). But it always blows my mind when I see bikers doing stupid stuff. Most have lost friends and they still don't get that fact it's dangerous to act stupid. However I will say riding stupid on a track is a lot of fun, even when you high side and crash. Haha

Like I said, I was on the very right lane.

The bikers essentially passed on both sides...Essentially going 3 wide when there were two lanes open on the left. If I had drifted one foot to either side, I would have taken out at least two of them.

What's even more confusing is that they actually needed to go on the left lanes to go onto an on ramp to go across Tampa Bay.

That's where I got it from grun. Unless his car is RHD and his driver's door is on the right.

The key words are group & and. 4 of them passed me. 2 on each side.

It was douchey and completely unnecessary.

Ditto. If they passed a foot from his drivers side, that would imply the left side of the car was passed via the shoulder. The original post stated that. If not edited, re-read it.

Not how I read it. They passed on the shoulder and right by the driver's door, which I took to mean on both sides of the car.

Darwin will sort that lot out soon enough.

Guy that hit me a few months ago was driving on the line between lanes, and had an entire open lane to use. I remember when I was ten feet tall and bulletproof, then I had my 19th birthday.

And it is a faulty generalization to ask why bikers are so dumb, implying that all bikers are so.

And poorly worded my OP may be. There's still no reason to use the shoulder in either scenario. Not when I'm a) going faster than the speed limit and b) there are two lanes open should they decide to go demonstrate their need for speed.

And you're right. Although bikes, and especially sportbikes, do attract a lot of of those personalities that are arrogant, aggressive and unnecessary risk taking.

Is it unfair that the perception precedes even those who ride with regards to the law and their general safety? Yes. But the overwhelming majority of riders I see are jackasses on the road...And they will crash. It's not if, but when.

Sporty machines tend to seduce their owners into fits of speed....I have to exert some self control on occasion when on a nice twisty public road.
I know a Porsche informal group that hits the back roads locally at felony speeds that have public traffic, blind corners, no escape areas (mtns)...basically street racing. They call it 'spirited driving'.
It's not just bikers or any subset....just folks a bit too secure in their own abilities and accepting a great deal of risk for unsuspecting others.

A lot of them drive normally. It is just the ones driving like idiots that stand out.

That said, there is a higher willingness to take risk in a biker than the average driver. Otherwise they wouldn't be on the bike in the first place. We have a lot of commuter bikers in the SFBay area and to save time, they do some interesting stunts around people that are half asleep and distracted on the wheel.
