agreed, on every single item this article mentions.
I am however, looking forward to next month's Jay Leno new show. He is a real car guy, and knows his stuff. I was out at El Mirage lake yesterday while they filmed the promo for the new show. After wrapping up, he made a point to walk around, check out the cars, and did not leave without saying a personal word of thanks and a handshake to all volunteers. I also enjoyed the Car Show with Adam Corolla, unfortunately that lasted about 6 hours before it was cancelled. Todge

I haven't seen "Fast N Loud" to render an opinion. "Misfit Garage" does look stupid to me, based on the very limited exposure I've had to it.
I do enjoy a lot of them, especially Graveyard Carz, Wheeler Dealers, *****in' Rides, Chasing Classic Cars, and FantomWorks. There's definitely several douche nozzle shows, too.

Car show suck on TV because for decades TV has had zero original ideas, and the networks milk any even mildly successful idea to death with multiple spinoffs.
Fast and loud aren't even remotely the beginning of the suckage. As best as I can remember it goes back to Orange county Choppers and Jesse James. I'm going to google the Jay Leno show, (and pray it is on a channel I get) he is smart, funny, and a real car guy. I did kinda like "Car Crazy" but the host was... well... and the car show with the guy that had the wild moustache who was also meh... However we can't really blame only the networks, it is the general publics inability to watch something that isn't dripping with drama and histrionics.

CarCast Several years ago he did an awesome show with the Hotchkis brothers and their 962 but all traces of it vanished from the web. Wish I could find it somewhere. |

Can't find any listing for Jay Leno's show on regular TV, is it only streamed?
And another reason I can't stand a lot of the new shows... I know the whole thing is staged but it is setup where they go out to the country and then smirking and bartering the get the car at a fraction of the price, then they haul it back to their shop, spiff it up a bit and flip it for a big profit (indicating they screwed the original owner).

why car shows on TV suck
Fantomworks is a good car show. No stupid deadlines. Some builds take a year! Quality and a safe car are the most important thing. No screaming arguments. No fake drama. I would love to have them take my El Camino and do their magic. I would never allow it to go through Overhauling or Gas Monkey.
I agree with most of the points in the OP link. I will indeed seek out the Jay Leno show.

There are three kinds of car shows on TV...ones that are primarily focused on the cars themselves, like Chasing Classic Cars, Wheeler Dealers, Dream Car Garage, etc. Ones that are primarily half-hour commercials for bolt-on parts, like All Girls Garage and Truck U. And then there are the ones that're all about the dipschits working in the shop, with the cars being relegated to the background, like Gas Monkey Garage, Counting Cars, Desert Car Kings, Restoration Garage, Graveyard Carz, and all the rest. Like almost every other 'reality' show on TV, these are all based on conflict & strife, and sadly, this is what most people want to see.

In addition to the online Jay Leno's Garage there is a new TV series that will be starting soon. They had one episode several months ago on CNBC. They just did a promo shoot out at El Mirage Dry Lake for the new series.

Does Jalopnik see the irony in them telling us about car oriented things that suck?

It starts on Oct 15. I'll be cleaning the car until then with all the dust we picked up being an "extra" at El Mirage.

TV sucks - across the board. You need to DO things, not watch other people do it on TV. If you love cars, be in YOUR garage or on YOUR back road. Same on other "hobby" shows, such as hunting, fishing, DIY etc.

All true but hey it works so they just keep doing it.
Especially this... "10 minutes of commercials". Next time actually time the commercials. You may be surprised.

I do find, that out of any show I've seen, as far as working on the cars goes, Wheeler Dealers is my favourite. Instead of pre-unbolted parts, you can get an idea of what its actually like to work on the cars that pass through. The "selling bit" at the end I'm not to fond of, but the actual work itself is quite fun.

I really like the car shows that are posative and try to show the actual builds and leave out all the drama and yelling. Fast and Loud is probably my favotite and I like chasing classic cars because there is no bullchit involved, I also like the show with the father/son who have a motorcycle museum and rebuild old barn finds.
Restoration garage and Graveyardcarz are just stupid, and spend half of the show with bullchit personal stuff and argueing amoungst the "professionals". The show MEGUIR'S Car Crazy shows some decent cars, but the host is a fruitcake and comes off as somewhat of a creepy pedophile type who is very touchy/feely with his guests |
