bucket list concerts

I've been lucky enough to see many amazing live concerts. But a few stand out, and frankly a handful have been rather transformative. If you have a chance...catch these people as at some point they all go away (as we all do).

First, Tommy Emmanuel. Possibly the best show I've ever seen. Just one guy and a guitar. But the sheer joy that he brings to the room is palpable. And he does make a joyful racket

Second, Hiromi. While I love the current trio with Anthony Jackson and Simon Phillips (also highly recommended), the first time I saw her was solo and my mind was blown. I literally was crying when she played "A Place to Be" - it was unbearably beautiful. Actually she was crying too - don't know that I've seen another musician who was more in the moment than her.

No BS - no dancing, no videos, no posturing. Just joy, sorrow, and every other emotion in-between found in the notes and the space between them.

Aside from the 100 Rush and 25 VH concerts I've been to, some of the others that really stand out are:

Jeff Berlin, Dennis Chambers and Scott Henderson
Eric Johnson and Mike Stern
Greg Howe, Victor Wooten and Dennis Chambers
John McLaughlin and Dennis Chambers
Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jeff Beck
Allan Holdsworth, Virgil Donati and Jimmy Haslip
Frank Gambale, Alain Caron and Damien Schmidt (un-effin-real)

There have been many more, but these were very "life enriching."

Tommy Emmanuel is in Annapolis on 12 November. Just ordered two tickets based on the video...I had never heard of him before.

My wife, who plays the piano, loves Hiromi.

I was fortunate to see a lot of live performances in the Bay Area when I was in school in small venues: Ramsey Lewis Trio, Kenny Rankin, etc. The last few recent concerts have been more symphony related.

While there are many more I'd like to see, I would rank seeing Van Morrison highest on my bucket list. 'Poetic Champions Compose' is still a favorite CD of mine.

The closest he gets this year is Toronto.

I also fear many of my bucket list bands have gone to the great beyond, SRV for instance...

I did see B.B. King at the Golden Bear and Ray Charles at the Ventura theater.

Would love to see Steely Jam but they don't seem to be touring anymore?

My son got us tickets to Rush in Anaheim the end of July. I haven't been to a concert in a very long time - looking forward to this!

Ive seen Tommy many times in many formats including with his brother Phil who is also mindblowing. Together, they were something else. But last year I went to a Tommy "Masterclass", small room, small gathering, TE, his gits. Had my mind blown all over again.

Ministry in their early 1990s ferocity, was a thing to experience.

I'd like to see Beck, but so far it hasn't worked out, but he's on my radar while he still sits on top of the world.

One of the bands I'm still happy I saw live (several times) was El-Rayo X. The only way I could have had more fun was if I was two people...Lindley still does live shows but it's different.

As far as other bucket listers, the only two I regret never seeing live are Pink Floyd and Led Zep.

(Ok, I also regret missing the old Blues men like Wolf or Muddy or Hooker or T Bone while they were in their prime, but that is just wishful thinking of the most ethereal kind....)

I grew up in Toronto so I grew up on Rush, they even played my high school before they broke big.
I flew up to Toronto to see them one last time with my brother and friends and it was well worth it, might even catch them again when they come through LA

I've seen Led Zep, Stones, Clash, Bowie, Stray Cats, INXS, Van Halen, AC/DC, Nugent, SRV, Johnny Winter, Ray Charles etc.

The only ones I haven't seen and need to get around to it before they're gone is Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Van Morrison, Prince and numerous lesser known bands and individuals,

In my youth, I remember passing by the corner of Ann Arbor's Washtenaw and S. University.
A passenger in the back seat of the toyota behind mom and grandma and Uncle and Aunt.
There is a Frat house there. The location of the 'Mud Bowl'
The 'Mud Bowl' is where informal football is played in a deep pit. In the mud.
A huge sign hung across the front of the building.
A name I'd never heard of. I.N.X.S.
People dancing. I wanted to get out.
We went by.

"A Night In San Francisco" is a great live album if you can't make it to Toronto.

AC/DC 1979, Neunkirchen West Germany. Highway To Hell tour. As you can see, we would get all the way upfront. Gotta love general admission concerts! Also saw them in '80 on the Back In Black tour. Bon passed 2 months after this photo was taken...

Led Zepplin 1980, Neunkirchen. Bonzo passed out 3 songs into the concert. They rescheduled to Munich, Bonham passed away as they were getting ready for the U.S. tour.

Hmmm, maybe I'm "bad juju" for rock bands!
