Anybody Been to Nurburgring?

Anybody been to Nurburgring? I will be in the area in late August and was wondering if anybody has done one of the rental race car track programs? I don't want to spend $2500 to do 10 laps in a 991. I just want to drive around the thing in something fun.

Any personal experience from Pelicans?

You're a track guy, right. I'd guess that your average rental car in Germany could be an Audi, BMW or Mercedes. Without spending the money to rent something extra special, I would think that any of those would be reasonably fun. Then, I would look into doing the ring taxi.

Several guys here have been. I'm sure you'll get some great answers.

I considered renting a car for the trip that would be kinda fun on the track, but because I'm a "track guy", I'd like to look into something I can rotate and have fun in (not a pushing pig on street tires). Plus, the extra cost of upgrading from a cheap sub-compact to an Audi for 10 days is more than renting a track car.

Thanks for the tip on the Ring-Taxi. I will certainly do that before getting behind the wheel.

I've been, but drove my cousin's Z4.

You can't really drive a regular rental on the track. They have scouts at the track that watch for the rental license plates and some companies have devices installed to check where you've been. They catch you at the 'Ring and you get a nice fine.

Thanks slodave. I just found that out from one of my POC friends as well. Most of the rental agencies in Germany have put track exclusions in the contract now. Even the track makes you sign a disclosure that you are not tracking a rental car.

I'll just rent the cheapest track rental and do the six laps.

I was there this past June. I simply wanted the experience of driving on the 'Ring and rented a mighty Renault Clio at the on-site rental agency HOME | RentRaceCar - Your Nr. 1 in RaceCars at NordschleifeRentRaceCar – Your Nr. 1 in RaceCars at Nordschleife. Renting a Porsche was prohibitively expensive and the insurance provided just left me in too vulnerable a position so I went for the Clio. I made a reservation and when I showed up they were all ready for me. I did two laps right when the track opened first thing in the morning so there wasn't a ton of traffic. No, the car wasn't P-car fast, but I didn't know the track either so didn't want to take any chances (can be really expensive if you ball it up), so the Clio was fun to drive and it was a great experience. I drove the first lap by myself and pulled in after that and my SO joined me and took videos and pictures on the second lap. Be sure and get to the merchandise store over by the F1 track entrance. Lots of neat stuff there 'Ring-related.

I've been by the track several times this year and wanted to drive it, but couldn't stomach the costs involved. Heck, I couldn't even pull the trigger on an hour drive in a 991 for 100 euro at the Porsche museum. But, I guess that's for another thread

Let us know how it goes!

Yeah, it ain't cheap ….Even in the Renult Clio it's looking like $115 per lap with insurance, fuel, and lap tickets. …But hey, it's a bucket list thing for me.

I just talked to the Porsche racer lesser half of the couple traveling with us. He's all for splitting 10 laps in the VW Sirocco. Oh well, $500 each and the bucket is filled.

Really? I am ashamed of you.

I have been on so many good roads in Europe where I wished I had a real car. Of course, it was probably a good thing I didn't.

OP: Enjoy the ring!

The best public road in Germany where you can really let loose in a rental car and be totally legal is the new A38 just inside the former E. Germany. That road never has any traffic and I don't recall many sections with speed limits.

I don't mean fast Rick. I mean the arm bending kind of road.

Go to 40.663786, 14.517793 on Google maps. That is SS366 which goes over the spine of the Amalfi coast. Or 37.201979, 14.701638 SS124 in Sicily. Or 35.127793, 24.935246 in Crete (roadname unknown). All stupendous drives but certainly not fast ones.

yikes, times have changed. I was there ~11 yrs ago and took the rental bmw for a scenic tour of the area... excellent experience. Do it if you get the chance, I only wish I was there longer.

If it is your first time on the ring, a sports car will not enhance the experience. It will just make it more expensive if you park it in the Armco and more awkward once you get lapped by BMW 318.

Pick a reasonably quick rental that can be driven on ring legally and do a couple of laps.

Unless you really don't have the money, it tough to pass on a life experience of this magnitude because it's "expensive".

$115/lap, that's nothing to sneeze at but you can bet your biff I'd be saving my lunch money to go!

You're right SauCy. WTF?...We're driving right past the Ring on the way from the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart to the F1 GP in Spa. We're going for it. I just put in a reservation for 10 laps in the Scirocco Cup+.

Thanks for the link rrental…
