UH OH- Went to the gun show wallet now lighter

I happen to live less than a mile away from a venue that holds gun shows several times a year. I don't go to every show but the weather has been so crappy here in GA. the past week I needed to get out !!! So off to the show I went, had some cash in hand but was mainly going to pick up additional ammo only . This venue generally has two buildings with vendors and today was no different. I casually walked the isles with HUNDREDS of other folks the place was quite full. There is no secret I am a sucker for older guns preferably with wood grips/stocks. I am just old school and like the feel of steel and wood grips. Anyway as I'm walking around looking at the various ammo vendors I came across a round rack with various shotguns and rifles on it. And then I spotted it , a Remington Sportsman 74 semi auto rifle in 30-06 with a 3 x 9 Bushnell scope. I picked it up ( big mistake ) and looked her over. Very solid to the touch with only two small scratches on the stock near the shoulder pad. Blueing in very nice shape and the scope has no scratches on it. Firing chamber doesn't look like it has fired a lot of rounds. In my opinion the gun is a 9 out of 10. After a little bit of haggling I walked out with her for $318.00 which was $300.00 for the gun and $18.00 for state tax. I think I did well. I will post pics but I'm heading back to pick up some more ammo

OK I am back from the 2nd stint at the show, went back for some additional ammo. Anyway I cleaned her up a little bit and gave her a rub down with some CLP. Pics are not my strength but here are a few. What I thought were scratches in the stock actually look like paint as in it was dragged across a painted surface like a wall or painted trim. The CLP didn't take it off so I'll have to use something else. If I can get the two white paint marks off of it she will be damn near perfect. I know she's old school and won't be a 400 yard sniper rifle but I liked it and that's all that matters. I'd like to get it out to a range to sight in the scope, then wouldn't mind shooting a hog. Time will tell. Enjoy the pics.

That's a good buy. If you need that kind of gun. Which I am sure you do!

That's quite nice. I'm thinking my next spoon will probably be something in that caliber, but I haven't seen anything anywhere near that affordable lately. Good work!

Ha ha not sure I " need " this gun more like I " wanted " it . I was originally looking online at guns costing twice as much but just couldn't justify the cost vs. how much I will use it. I figure for what I paid it will just increase in value. The wood on the fore arm has a nice subtle tiger stripe in the grain it looks real nice in person. Funny story there were two of these for sale by different vendors, one in each building. The other one for sale was beat to crap and the wood was such a mis-match I'm guessing either the stock or fore arm were replaced. The guy was asking $450.00 So based on the condition this one is in I think I got a good deal. But first I have to make sure it goes bang !

Depending on the stock's finish; you may be able to make those scratches disappear but putting a wet cloth over the scratches then putting a hot clothes iron over the cloth. Have fun with the new toy.

So, what are people using semi automatic 30-06 rifles for? Hunting when requiring quick follow up shots? Hunting dangerous game? How many rounds does this puppy hold?

When I Antelope hunt, I always have 2 tags. Many times, as Antelopes like to hang out in herds, it goes bang, bang - hunt over. I guess for this type of situation, a semi auto may give me an edge!

Aigel the gun was designed/sold back in the day as a hunting rifle my guess for deer and other large game. Lets face it a clean first shot/kill is preferred but isn't always the case. So a quick 2nd shot may be needed. This model has a max capacity of 5 rounds, four in the mag and one in the chamber. I have shot bolt action rifles in the past which were very accurate. Many say a semi auto is not as accurate but if I can get decent groupings at 100 , 150 + 200 yards that's fine by me. I need to find a local range and get her sighted in. Also need to pick up a sling she already has the sling mounts installed.

Nice find! Note to self....don't go shopping for ammo with a roll of Franklins

Wonder why the 30.06 is rarely mentioned these days? Though my deer rifle from my teens is a lever .30-30, back then, the other caliber of choice was invariably the .06...times change but classics don't IMO. I take it you didn't notice a nice .22 revolver while "shopping for ammo" ?

30:06 is the best all around caliber. You can use it for everything from coyotes to moose.

No I didn't find a .22 revolver. There were a few new ones but I wasn't impressed. There were some used ones but I only liked one of them but didn't purchase. Although my entrance ink stamp from yesterday hasn't washed off yet I do agree that 30-06 is a very versatile round.

Was that the show at the Jim Miller park in/near Marietta? If so, I was there from about 10:30 until noon. Didn't buy anything, but did make a donation to help buy police dog bullet proof vests! I made the mistake of parking on the grass and almost got my F150 stuck in the mud!

Yes Jim Miller Park I live in Cumberland Creek so literally I can walk to the gun show . I made a donation to the booth that was touting that the Wounded Warriors was a scam. I have heard for years that it was and the info these guys had was just more proof for me . Yeah with all the rain we have had it would have been easy to get a truck stuck. Not much stops " kong " which is my 4 x 4 GMC diesel dually !!

that is a great find at a really good price. The iron and wash rag trick only works on dents. You may want to use a fine rubbing compound like the stuff to buff plastic headlight lenses to get the paint marks off.

Because all the manufacturers are focused on convincing you that you need a fancy new necked down cartridge.....that costs $1.50 a round....and requires you to buy a new rifle.

"7mm Remington Short Action Ultra Magnum"...wtf? It's a the perfect gun for a guy who orders a "two pump extra hot half shot pumpkin spice soy latte".

Here's my weekend score: Savage 111 in 30.06 Came with 7 boxes of ammo. PO "upgraded" to a .270 If you deduct the ammo cost it was $200 CDN or $150 USD

There was one vendor at the show that was selling Remington bolt action rifles. These were brand new with composite stocks and in your choice of .223 , .243 , .270 or 30-06 for $249.99 ! But the closer you looked it over the rougher it looked. Not sure what they are putting on steel barrels these days but it was rough looking bluing to me. That's part of the reason I like the older guns they just seem to be built better. To each their own.
