Warranty on vehicle originally from Canada

Bought a used 2014 Jeep earlier this year. Car originally sold in Canada...I'm in US. Love the car and have had no problems but learned there may be an issue with warranty in US. Anyone know the short story on this?

Go ask the dealer, it's likely NOT under warranty. They don't like the cross border shopping.

Tell them you are a native North American, then they have no recourse. That would legally allow you to ignore the border.

Some companies care more than others...

Here's a table describing warranties for different makes of cars coming from the US to Canada... presumably there's a similar table for the other direction (given the reversal of exchange rates)

That's an interesting question. I bought a 2007 Ford Explorer through Kaisen (Eric) at a wholesale auction that supposedly had originally been sold in Canada. In the northern part of the state it's not uncommon for Canadians to come over the border to shop, especially when the exchange rate is favorable so I don't know whether the car was originally sold in the US and brought to Canada and made its way back or if it was sold in Canada originally. Eric said it didn't matter and didn't think anything of it. We're well out of warranty but we've had it serviced at the dealer and no one has ever batted an eye. The only consequence I know of is that the owner's manual is in French. No kidding. I think it makes the truck seem a little more classy.

Anyway, here's the 2014 Jeep Warranty for the US

http://www.jeep.com/crossbrand/warranty/pdf/2014_Jeep_Warranty.pdf

The Basic Limited Warranty covers your vehicle only if:

• it was built for sale in the U.S.;
• it’s registered in the U.S.;
• it’s driven mainly in the U.S. or Canada;

Here is the 2014 Jeep Warranty in Canada

http://www.chryslercanada.ca/owners/en/manuals/2014/2014B-Grand_Cherokee-WML-1st.pdf

VEHICLES COVERED

The warranties in this booklet cover new vehicles only which are built for sale in Canada and are registered and normally operated in Canada. The warranties apply to all owners of the vehicle.

The thing is that Jeeps are probably manufactured "for" the US market and the Canadian market at the same time. If so, it seems that a vehicle built for either the US or Canadian market but sold in Canada would be covered in the US if it was resold to an American and registered in the US.

That's the argument I would make.

I just bought a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited for a customer, it was at an American auction but an original Canada car. It was sold as having no factory warranty. At five years old the bumper to bumper warranty was expired, and the powertrain was nearly expired, so pretty low risk in that case.

My 2013 F150 is also former Canadian, it was not marked as having no warranty but I also haven't tried to use it. At 50k miles the 60k powertrain warranty is almost gone, so again not much of a loss.

I think with our dollar being low right now you will be seeing more Canadian vehicles heading to the States.
